Dipstick length variation (which one is correct?))

I have just fit a new dipstick and tube guide. Had to buy both as doubt the old one was ever made to fit on my car (passat 1.8 sport 20v 1999 petrol)

Now the new oil dipstick doesn't read any oil at all. According to my searches, the difference between levels min and max is about 1 liter, meaning I am missing over 1 liter at the moment! (I also assume, "some" not sure how much but "some" oil would be missing by now)

I bought the car like this and has always had the tube-guide broken and I can safely assume the car was driven like this for well over 10k like this. (also had a leaking rad which I just replaced and just getting ready to full service it, hence my "findings")

The old dipstick N/P is 053 115 611C (i found it was very much forced through the old tube-guide, it was very hard to remove)
The new one is 053 115 611B (was advised by the producers it was right for my car's full spec)

Both tub-guides are the same and the new one well fitted after hot water bath.

I have done search after search and can't find a thing.

Any one with the same car who can let me know the right length/part number? or know the difference?

Should I fill in the right amount of oil (3 + 1/2lt "Haynes Manual") and see which one fits according to the level readings? (hate the idea but is my only choice today)

Thank you in advance!

I have no idea which dipstick / tube is correct for your car's motor. But your idea to fill the motor with the correct quantity of oil to see what shows is a good one; it may be that both the dipsticks you've tried are incorrect.

If you already have some oil in the car, I wouldn't put any more in just yet, since you risk overfilling and causing major engine or catalytic converter damage. Wait until you get the right dipstick, then add some oil if necessary.

Also, if you are using the bigger filter (a great idea), you will have somewhere around 4-4.5 qts of oil in the engine when it is full.

The difference in part numbers indicate a split VIN component.

06B115611 oil dipstick / F >> 3B-Y-100 000* / AHL,ARM,ANA

06B115611C oil dipstick / F 3B-Y-100 001>>* / AHL,ARM,ANA
If you're happy to PM me your reg plate I can find out more for you.

This seem to be a problem every Passat owner goes through at some point...yet vw keeps the plastic bits...

Thank you all for your help. I very much appreciate it

I will be changing oil and filter tomorrow and today have no idea if the amount on it is the right one... at least no warning lights have come on yet.

re:mycarsavw: I will PM my reg. thank you!

For anyone who is interested;

I get the guide tube as being 050 103 663 but if it is clipped into a metal bracket, it is 06B 103 675 B with the dipstick for the former being 053 115 611 C and the later being 06B 115 611 R.

The change point for both is Y chassis and as the car is an X chassis, I would go for the earlier numbers in both cases.

It make more sense than any other explanation I have hear and I am T reg.

If I place the early numbers oil level mark is low but not too much (no alarm so far!)

My only concern is that both (the new tubeguide and the old one) are to tight for 053 115 611 C... very tight! (hence, it broke before! and will brake again) and 053 115 611B seem perfect but barely get a touch of oil!

For reference here are couple of pics been 053 115 611 C the lighter and longer dipstick and 053 115 611B smaller darker.

Errr...will use 3 +1/2 Litters to replace the oil and double check on both! If still in doubt...will have a go to the VW dealer and pay for my ineptitude!!!

Than you all once again!

hmmm just wondering...would any of you have or can find a pic for the metal mini bracket where the tubeguide sit?

For 2000 V6 you should need at least 6.3 to 6.5 quarts for the oil change. Are you sure you measure the oil level on a leveled ground? Did you drain the oil fully? Did you put very small non-OEM oil filter?

For '99 1.8L 20V non-turbo I'd think it should be the same as 1.8T, 3.5L (3.7 quarts) if you use original sized VW filter.
