Dashboard squeaks after 17K

I have noticed over the past two months my dashboard is making a squeaking/rubbing sound every time I hit a bump, brake hard, or turn quickly. The sound is comming from the dash right in front of me. It seems to be at the base of the dashboard near the windshield.

Anyone else having this difficulty?

It is not a rattle, but more like the dash is moving a small amount, and rubs against the frame/glass/internal stuff.

I am planning on calling the dealer and complain. I have only 17K on the car, and up until this past fall, the car was amazingly quiet.

Yup, I have the same problem too, but the funny thing is, one ride it'll be perfectly quiet; the next, squeeky as can be. Not too annoying or loud at all, but still, sorta bugs me! I'd do something about it, but imagine the look on the mechanic's face when he hears absolutely nothing. Also, I think by tearing apart your console/dashboard in hopes to find the problem, you'll only end up making it worse. bah! Until it gets really bad, i'm just turning on the radio.

I use the standard non-professional approach to this problem in my car, just whack it and hope it goes away. Usually works for a while.

Believe it or not®.

I've found a simple can of spray silicone with
that thin, little tube attachment thingie ( like
WD-40) works on squeeks like a charm. I started
noticing squeeks the first few weeks of ownership
3 years ago, so I just used the silicone instead
of resorting to felt pads, dismantling dash, etc.

No squeeks in 3 years, and it's safe on electronics
and leather.

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Mike McCaffrey)

Wow - you got to 17K before the squeeks started? Mine started within 1K!

I've got the exact same squeek you're getting, mine is closer to the driver side A pillar, right where the dash meets the windshield.

But it is intermittent. When it's very warm out, no squeeks at all. Also, when it's very cold out - no squeeks. Mine seem to happen when it's transitioning from cold to hot or hot to cold - if that makes any sense. Seems to be a temperature gradient effect.

It is really annoying though. Still debating whether to take it in or not. Of course, you'd have to be able to reproduce it with the service guy in the car. And for me, since it happens under an extremely specific condition, I don't think I'd have much luck.

I'm sure they know it's a problem, but by them demanding that you reproduce it for them, they also know that it's a far smaller percentage of cars that they actually have to address.

Good luck with yours.

Same squeeks here....also on the rt side by A-pillar. Usually notice the squeeks when cold.....Will have to try the silicone spray...it works well as I have tried on other vehicles.

Has anyone had, squeeks with rt rear seat back on a wagon? Now that is a major PITA.

Mike,
I think in a situation like this Alex has really choosen to do the right thing.
for something so small, I'd hate to have the mechanics rip the dash out

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (NoneRock)

yup, got it. Try jamming a black dress sock that you can't find the match for between the dash and windshield. That helped my problem quite a bit. The silicon might do the trick, I just can't find my straw attachment!

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Mike McCaffrey)

I wish my Passat wasn't squeking (10500 miles). I'm suprised that Passat interior is one of the best on the market (materials) and it squeks. My wife drives Suzuki XL-7 and dashboard made out of hard plastic and no squeking.

Wait - so where exactly do you spray the silicone stuff? All across the dashboard where it meets the windshield?

That's awesome if it works ... I'd just be afraid to start spraying things into my dashboard. Can someone clarify a bit?

I've had this obnoxious rattle in my dash for a while, sounds like it's resonance though ...

Thanks!

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (RobNick)

I've got to agree with Alex. My car's rattles and squeaks drove me batty in that mileage range. Now, with 62k on the clock, things have quieted down. Cold does make rattles worse too....

Believe it or not, if I push my dash towards the front window the noise goes away. It typically will stay "fixed" for a week or so before it annoys the SH_T out of me again. I am going to try the silicone thing...sounds like it has promise

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Mike McCaffrey)

I noticed my squeaks' after 6K and I have no idea which part of the dashboard it's coming from.... It's driving me nuts!! I am so glad that I found you guys on the same boat...
It's obviously not a big problem, but it's really annoying!!

How do I resolve this?

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Mike McCaffrey)

welcome to the club! I've found that eitehr silicone spray or wd/40 works fine. It even works on the noisy glove box (scrapes as it opnes) and the squeek from the center arm rest when you have it extended.

That's why I stuck a sock down there. It effectively pushes on the dash constantly for you. Try it! it works.

What you are observing is the difference between luxury and quality. Most Japanese cars in this segment go the other way - higher quality, lower luxury.

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Mike McCaffrey)

I'm amazed to see this squeak is as common as it is. Mine squeaks right up at the windshield every time I hit a bump - large or small. It's not that bad, but it can be pretty annoying if the radio isn't on. I tried jamming some foam caulk backing between the dash and windshield, but that didn't do anything. I'll have to try out the silicone solution - anybody with pointers on where to shoot?

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Ju5t1n)

Okay guys, the fix to this problem is easy, clean and simple. Actually, some other member of clubb5 posted this solution and I tried it. It works like a charm. Goto Home Depot and pick up some 1/2" - 3/4" black foam "caulk saver". It comes in a roll of like 15 ft or something. Take the foam and push it in the space between your windshield and dash. Almost like laying a bead of caulk, unroll the foam evenly into the gap. More than likely you will have to double back and stuff another layer of foam in the gap (mine needed it). I did this about two months ago and have not had the creaking sound re-occur.

:edit: I just read Ju51n's response. I guess it doesn't work for everyone....

well, for the minimal amount of cash and work needed, it's certainly worth a shot.

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (sentraSR20)

Thank you for all of the responces. I seams to have hit a chord.

I'll try the silicon.

I agree, having the dealership rip into it is the worst thing.

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (sentraSR20)

Sentrasr20...
I'll have to try a second pass with the caulk saver. When I tried it I only ran one pass with the foam. Maybe it just needed some more jammed in there. Now hopefully there's still enough left after that bathroom caulking project...

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Ju5t1n)

Two days after getting my Jetta, in '99, the same dashboard squeak started. Each service, thereafter, I'd ask this squeak to be fixed. Sometimes the techs could hear it; most times they could not. They worked on it, and it progressively got worse. Somewhere around 30K, they decided to replace the dashboard completely. They finally killed the original squeak, but a few more surfaced.

So far, in the Passat, there have been only a few "groans" in the cold weather, but no serious squeaks.

My advice: turn up the radio.

Re: Dashboard squeaks after 17K (Mike McCaffrey)

Mike

Sounds like what happened to me. I have a 2001.5 (01/01 Build) and at my recent 20k service, the dealer looked at the issue and replaced my entire dashboard under warranty.

Seems some build dates had the clips or other fastener pieces shear, leading to the squeak. I suspect there maybe other causes such as 3rd party stereo installers being careless, etc. etc, but my dash was stock - untouched except for the Euro light switch

Maybe they still haven't figured it out yet on the production line....push for a new dash.
