So I am driving home (4 hour trips) and the cruse was acting crazy!!!! It would just turn off without hitting anything (7 times). Then when I would start it up again sometimes it would work and others it wouldn't come on at all. Once home I watch a hockey game and started up the old passat to head back to my home and dammit it won't work at all, till I turned it off at a rest stop and then it worked...for 30 mins then no matter what I did..No go. I looked on the forum and anything that comes up is I had 30 mpg on a trip...lol. Please can you guys help??

Thank you

The CCM does not control the cruise - there is a completely seperate module behind the glove box. Probably 75% or more of the cruise control problems that we've seen here have been tied to that module. You can have it rebuilt for somewhere around $75 or so...

I also have a 99 V6, and after trying two CCM's I replaced the multifuntion switch, AKA the turn signal. If you look real close behind where the turn signal meets the column, there is a small ribbon connector that transmits CC data and is known for failure. Mine had the same symptoms, I got a used part for $25 (the part includes both the turn signal lever and the wiper lever, and requires the removal of the airbag and steering wheel), but wasn't too tough to do with a screwdriver and an outie hex socket for the steering wheel.

When mine went out, it was intermittent at first, then never ever worked after a while. I'm not very mechanically inclined, and this was an easy one for me, so I'd say go for it. I found the part by doing a regional search on www.car-parts.com, and then filtering by distance.

Best of luck!

I have had good luck spraying electrical contact cleaner into the cruise control switches on the turn signal stalk, at least temporarily. I spray both down the end push button and under the slider switch, then work both of them. It took two applications a few days apart.

The cruise control has not acted flaky for the past few months. I suspect that eventually I will need to replace the stalk, it does have 125k on it. I also got an occasional loud squawk from the relay behind the hazard switch when I used the turn signals. This has also gone away.

Have you looked into the cruise control lever itself? There's a ribbon cable running into the steering column that, when it cracks, causes the cruise not too work. I've heard of that being the source of the problem before, and replacing the turn signal and wiper stalks (and the base that they connect to) fixed the problem.

Another place you could check, if your 99 is drive-by-cable, not wire, would be that the cruise control stick is still attached to the throttle body. I'm not sure of the name of the part, but at the driver side back of the engine block is a vacuum bag that controls the position of the throttle when the cruise is on. There's a little plastic stick that runs from this bag to the cable reel on the throttle body, but only if it is DBC.

Best luck.

On my 1998 the dealer replaced practically everything -- Cruise Control motor (or whatever you'd call it that holds the gas cable on an AEB), Cruise control stalk, brake switch, clutch switch... argh. FINALLY they replaced the relay behind the glove compartment and that was the issue. Part showed to be around $220 or so from the dealer, but that was something they bought - not me - so it may have been discounted or something.

I'd really recommend replacing it first. Since having mine replaced I have noticed a lot of others coming to the same conclusion, just as soundguybob said. These seem to be prone to going out similar to the ABS module freaking out and needing some sauder work.

Good luck!

Dude, The CCM (under the carpet in front of the driver's seat) has absolutely NOTHING to do with the cruise control. Now, if people are referring to the Cruise Control Module (could also get CCM from that), then yes, that's it. THAT is what's behind the glovebox. It has a relay in it, but it's not just a relay. And, like I said before, THAT is the cause of the problem ~75% of the time...

Also, there is a second switch on the brake pedal that opens the vaccum "circuit" that controls the crusie actuator. I'd look over the vaccum lines on the driver's side of the car. The vaccum pump is buried in the bracketry on the side at the front of the wheel well. The vaccum lines should "T" after the pump, one end goes to the actuator, and the other end goes inside to that switch on the brake pedal...

Where to start

I have a 1999 Volkswagon 1.8T Wagon that has cruise problems like those described here (worked at first, then would randomly cancel while driving now it rarely sets). I know nothing about cars, but I want to try and fix this on my own. I've looked at the brake lights, fuses, and tried contact cleaner.

Should I next replace that module behind the glove box? Can someone help describe how to do that? Also, I looked on car-part.com and found lots of results--what should I buy? Or is there a better place to buy one?

Thanks!

the problem is in the switch, located on the left lever behind the steering wheel also associated with the turn signal, i believe.

when you say that this disengages, does the "CRUISE" on your instrument cluster also fade out, or blink off? if so, then it's deffinitely the switch.
just got mine replaced a few days ago.

I've never seen anything that says "CRUISE" on the Instrument Cluster... and looking in my manual doesn't seem to suggest there should be.
I have a 2000 wagon with cruise control. From what I've been told a "Cruise" light didn't appear until 2001. My Owner's manual says I have one, but I dont. The manual also also says I have an immobilizer light, but I dont (have immobilizer, just no light). To confuse matter even further it shows the older dash layout

Before replacing the Cruise Control Module (behind and above the glove box), try the "multifunction switch" or turn signal and wiper levers. I found one at a junkyard for $25. The only trick is taking out the airbag before removing the steering wheel -- Just make SURE you disconnect the battery, then wait a half hour, and go to it. I spoke with a VW mechanic before messing with the airbag because I didn't want my screwdriver to go through my face, and he said that once the battery is disconnected the chance of airbag detonation is nearly nothing.

There are a few clips in the airbag at 9 and 3, then the steering wheel removes with one bolt. That's where the wiper and turnsignal levers and thier bracket are attached and can easily be removed and replaced.

I replaced the Cruise Control Module first, because I had read about it in threads. It cost me $110, and did nothing. If anyone wants a CCM, I have two that I will be happy to sell cheap. The switches are where the problem usually lies, I have now discovered. Anyone who wants help with the bag or wheel, let me know. I've been in there a number of times now and never had a problem.

Best of Irish luck!

LOL...this blew up while I left. I never had a chance to look and at this point I will take the steering braket out and look at the stick. Then go for the glovebox, but will not take the dash out. I will have to look at an bently and see where this part is...thanks for all the help:thumbup:

If you are having intermittent CC issues, nineteen times out of twenty, it will be the brake safety switch being out of adjustment (and/or clutch safety switch).

Need to verify both these switches are adjusted properly before :banghead: tearing your :banghead: dash apart and breaking or otherwise :banghead: screwing up something unrelated to the CC that was OK beforehand.

Get the message? ;)

can someone help explain how to adjust those switches?

p.s. today i was drove 50 miles. i tried the cruise several times, to no avail. then, after restarting the car it worked. but it stopped after 7 minutes, and i didn't feel the brake pedal physically move nor did i drive over any noticable bumps.

thanks!!

pson, any update? Thought I'd post my recent experiences. I have a 98 1.8t. Over the last couple years CC when from working intermittently to not working at all.

I pried open the CC stalk without removing the steering wheel. I cleaned it, but it still didn't work. Then I used a multimeter to see if the stalk and brake switches were sending signals to the Cruise Control Module. Found that they were sending signals. Send the CCM out to ATE to get it rebuild last Wednesday and recieved it back this Wednesday and everything is working again. It is sooo nice to have CC working again!

I've had CC problems in the past as well. True the CCM has NOTHING to do with cruise. I replaced the module behind the glove box for a cost of $25. Criuse worked for about a year and a half then stopped working. Traced last problem to vac. pump next to the ABS module. pulled off the pump or what ever that thing is and fixed the leak with JB Weld. Also put in new vac lines which were adding to the problem. Criuse has been working A1 since I did all of the work.
