Car won't start after an event where I lost power

Okay so I was heading home from a friends place. I start the car, and on top of the usual engine's sound I heard a second sound. This sound, like an engines sound, happened many times per second so I assume it was from something rotating but I don't know for sure. It was also a "lighter" or "looser" sound.

I started driving it home, and within about 2 minutes of driving I suddenly lost significant power, experienced difficulty steering, all the lights in my car went dim (not completely off), and ALL the warning lights came on. I opened my window and got a massive whiff of something burning.

I made it home and the next day had my friend come by to help figure out the issue. I hadn't tried to start it because I was afraid I'd damage something if I tried.

Friend came by, and it wouldn't start. The engine doesn't do a single thing when we try to start it, we don't even get a click. The battery light, EPC light, and the check engine light is on.

We had a boatload of codes from the loss of power the night before and the one he told me to look into was "P3087"

We checked all of the fuses and each one lit up the little tester thing he had, indicating they all had power.

We disconnected the battery for 10 minutes and then tried starting it after that, still nothing.

We ended the night still unable to get anything happening.

Does anyone have any ideas? We're going to take it to his shop to continue diagnosing, but if anyone knows something that would make this process easier that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Can you be more descriptive of the sound? Was it clicking, banging, whirring, whining etc.

It sounds like your engine stopped running but because you were moving the alternator was still running so the lights went dim. All the warning lights went on because that is what it does before you start the engine. Did you have to start it again by turning the key or did it just start again by itself? If it started again by itself then you probably have an electrical short circuit.

Burning smell is very bad. If it smells like burning plastic and metal then again it was probably electrical. Can you still smell it? Can you locate roughly where the smell is coming from?

I would check the engine fuses, battery and ground connections, and wiring harnesses. Look for anything melted, loose or corroded connections, white residue from an short circuit, rub marks near moving parts, rodent damage.

Post all your codes. Was this a VCDS scan or ODBII? If it was ODBII then get a full scan (VW or VCDS) as it will quickly tell you if any electrical modules burnt out.
