Car almost jacked for my LCD/DVD in front of my house

Well don't know whether this is my lucky or unlucky day. Unlucky that I couldn't get my car moving, lucky that I got back in time to save my car from a break in attempt.

My car was parked on the street overnight, which I rarely do as I have a driveway. I was about to go out to rent a movie from Blockbuster around an hour ago. Started my car and about to leave, but my brake light sensor started acting on me again so I couldn't engage into gear. I gave up and rode in my friend's car - '02 A4 Votex kit.

I came back 20 mins later to try get the car going again. So when I got back, a few [teenager, caucasian] guys were "surveying" my car - very attracted and focused at my dash area (6th switch) where my LCD screen is mounted, alongside with my headunit and DVD player in that area. They were also "surveying" my OEM projector housing. A rather ghetto pick up truck was waiting down the street.

So my friend and I cruised down the street aproaching my car, they start looking at my friend's flashy A4. Okay they didn't seemed to be bothered but further look how to work their way into my car. Same deal when I stopped right next to my car. So as I did not say a word and unlocked my door and walked to my car, they didn't seem to care much but to stay around the area. As I leave they then slowly dismiss.

Oh yeah, bear in mind the street I live on is where a lot of cops and local politicians live.

Now I realize why all my friends have AV systems have car alarm security systems with a pager remote. Think I need some CCTV aiming at my driveway and in front of my house, and time to consider those alarm systems.

its reasons like this im glad i now live in a "gated" community. where you need an access card to even get into the development, or you have to speak to a security officer if you a vistor. its worth the little extra money i have to pay a month, (plus i have a golf course\tennis court\bb court\)

before when living in a college town, i had been robbed at gun point, my house burglurized, and my neighbor was tied up and robbed once too. not to mention numerous other crimes portayed on my block. crazy people out there

id go with the CCTV and a nice new baton(sp?) the ones that extnd into a long one (cop style)

If I had what you have on your car, I wouldn't trust anyone around here. Medford is a decent area, but Somerville and Cambridge are just a few miles away. There was a survey last year rating the safest places in MA and Somerville and Cambridge both placed in the 140s out of 150. A cop lives on my street as well, so that's cool.

I have a green residential pass though, so I usually park under the lights behind Cohen or at Carmichael. Even then though, there are always assclowns that go around messing with cars.

This is sick, but desperate situations lead to desperate measures….

Ten years ago after I had my THIRD stereo stolen from my ’92 Golf  (remember how easy it was to pop the front vent window to break into the Golf and pull out the stereo unit?) I decided that I had enough. I super-glued single edge razor blades to the chassis of the radio so if the little bastards tried to jack the fourth stereo they would at least pay with a pint of blood….

As it turns out, the Golf never was broken into again. (Not sure why) Probably just as well because I’m certain that I would have been the subject of a lawsuit by the S.O.B. thief who got cut up by the razors.

BTW – I never had any electrical problems or other issues concerning the dashboard, but just in case I had a note in my service manual for the technician about the razor blades. I always accessed the service manual when I dropped off the car for service, so the note was a constant reminder that I made to the tech, and no accidents happened.

BTW#2- I removed the razors when I sold the car, so no lurking disaster awaited the subsequent owner. :)

I have since reformed and currently have no booby traps in my car... :nervous:

Ok now that my car wasn't broke into, another friend had his car broken into later on in the day yesterday, hence the night after I was almost broken into for his whole system. I did not hear about this incident till later on today. It is a '03 A4, but not the A4 I was riding in as described in the first post of this thread. I didn't dare asking him where it happened or how it happened - heard it from another friend. You know how incomfortable it can be when someone just randomly calls you up saying "Oh shit so what happened to your system?"

DVD, Navigation, slide-out LCD, headrest LCD, amps, subs, all gone. I think that's around $4000 worth of stuff.

Also bear in mind they did it so quick that my friend has the Hornet and by the time he got down to his car it was all gone. Man we gonna have to equip our cars with those 2" thick windows and bullet proof doors like in South America soon.

I think the big guys are out and hunting in Boston metro again for the season.
