I've had mine in the "on" position since I bought the car in Oct. '97. I will qualify that statement by telling you that I had to have the cruise control module replaced a few months ago after it hadn't worked for nearly a year.

I leave mine on all the time too. I use it alot. I feel that switching the thing on and off will break the switch. The switch is so hard to move and doesn't feel like it will last if I switched it off and on all the time.

THat's the same reason I leave mine on. THe cruise is just not well thought out I think as far as placement or ease of use. You really gotta get a good grip on the switch to move it. Mine has been on since I bought the car. THough I rarely use it

Mine has been on since I took delivery April 99, while only turning it off momentarily less than 5 times since then. No problems, no replacements. But yeah, it takes a small amount of dexterity to engage it without flashing your hi beams at others...not the best.

Do the B5.5s have them on their steering wheels now? I think that's ideal.

Anyone know why the hell they didn't give us a NORMAL cruise light rather than this goofy one (new in 2002).

For those that have older than 2002s, a light in the control cluster comes on when you click the cruise button "on". The light stays on in the cluster even if you are stopped! ALL cars I've ever seen have a indicator that lights when the cruise is engaged and goes off when you hit your brake.

No....that would make SENSE!

Believe it or not, I think that's where VAG cars have always had their cruise switches -- I remember my dad's 1979 Audi 5000S had it in the exact same location, and it worked exactly the same, too.

I think it's in the same place on the newer B5.5's as well, they just added an extra set of buttons on the steering wheel for convenience.

this is funny because I never touched it after the first week I owned it back in 6/98. I just recently showed my wife the cruise control and realized it been on since 4 years back.

Still works fine.

Every car I've owned that has had cruise control have always been left in the on position. It shouldn't hurt anything or cause any problems, all it is doing is allowing you to engage and disengage the cruise at will. Turning it off just prevents you from being able to use cruise. Plain and simple.

However that does suck for the 2002+ owners with the indicator thing, how stupid.

quote:
Exactly, that is why I turn it off unless I'm on the Highway.

I just had a thought (

) ... maybe VW figured out that leaving the cruise ON all the time was a bad thing so they invented this amazingly annoying light so we remember to turn it off when we aren't using it!

Cruise left on since after break in period.
Delivery in Nov 2000.
Switch left on, I use steering wheel buttons, no indicator lights ever.
So many differences in so few years.
HHmmm?

Man the VW cruise control is one of my larger VW gripes. I'd use the cruise control on the the Passat if they designed the thing with a little more ergonomics. The BMW cruise control is perfect and works like a formula shift paddle. It's in the same position as the Passats. It's always on, no light. Push forward to activate and accelerate; push back to decelerate; push up or down to turn off. simple.

Of course I'm comparing that to my '98 passat. Have the newer Passats simplified the cruise control function?

quote:
hmmm, I noticed that my manual said I should have a cruise indicator light, but when its on I get no light. I have a 2000 GLX 4motion, any insight? Thanks.

Yeah, there's no light on the 2000s. I have been trying to find one for 2 years, but it doesn't exist.

My cruise has only been on twice, I never use it. I do like the fact that you can turn it on and leave it on. My Acuras' cruise would shut off if you braked, and you had to turn it back on. That got me out of the habit of using it, and now I find it to be a useless feature.

quote:
What if...

You have a manual with the cruise control in use set at 65mph
then you throw yourself into neutral?

Anyone ever done this?

Clutch, brake or shift all disengage the cruise.

Will it really hurt your car to leave the cruise on? the only thing that might happen is the dash cruise indicator light may burn out ... and that would be a plus in my book!
Image

I leave it on all the time because I use it a lot. I am more concerened about breaking the stupid stalk switch.

Ya but VW has probably designed it so that when that indicator does burn out, your car goes into "25mph/2500 RPM limp mode" and then requires about 5 hours of VW shop time to take your dash apart and replace that bulb!

OTOH, that bulb is probably an LED that'll out-last the life of this car and your next two cars combined.

Re: Can cruise control be left in "on" position at al ... (Anthracite)

My uncle worked for Perfect Circle, who developed cruise control back in the 60's.
He said the off switch was only there for the nervous folks who have to have control of it. There is never a need to turn it off.

Look at the Mercedes cargo net, it's about $30 or so and works well.
