This just started happening...

When I crank the heat up all the way, I immediately smell a very strong "burning rubber" smell. It's pretty nasty. But there hasn't been any smoke (yet).... :nervous:

Any ideas?

TIA

it is possible that you engine cover gasket leaks. some oil gets on the hot engine and smells bad...
Is this something I can open the hood and look at?
(I'm not that savy)
What should I look for?
Where exactly should I look?

Thanks!

dont remember if you have or not remove the plastic picer. but you should see some oil dirt where engine cover mounts to the head. you should check all way around but most likely it would be on any of the sides.
Just to clarify...
Do you mean:
Using a coin, remove the 3 plastic pieces that cover the engine and inspect around there?

I thought you have 1.8....
I am not sure how it looks on V6 but should be similar.
But jest remove the plastic pices and see what you have there...
It is very obvious when the gasket leaks.
good luck
I'll check it out.

Thanks!

Does your passenger take off his shoes in the car? Maybe the re-circ is blowing the funk right into your face!

The smell is usually hot oil leaking from valve cover leak or a oil leak from the rear seal on a camshaft. Usually the leak is on the passenger side. The intake air for the heat is on that side also. These leaks are warranty fixes under the powertrain warranty. The repair usually take just a couple hours. Mine did this and there have been many other post on this also. Good Luck. Greg
