Hi everyone. I have searched and searched this forum for this problem and I've found many like it but not the same thing. I have also tried every solution you guys have come up with so I thought I would try a fresh post...
Ok here it goes... I have a 2000 passat varient 2.8 with 4motion AT and the problem is with the power fold function in the mirrors. They fold in perfect but when I unfold them they both fold all the way to the fender and they won't stop where they should in the middle. I've tried everything from tearing the mirrors down to the post and cleaning them, replacing the switch, unhooking the battery (many many times), leaving the ignition on for three minutes with divers door open to reset the computers, trying it with the ignition on, car running park reverse and drive (still nothing different), turn the switch to fold out and hold the mirrors where I want them to set the memory (nope didn't work), currently have the ccm and wiring torn apart all over the floor completly unraveled checking all the splices, especially the CAN bus splices (yep AOK).:banghead::confused::banghead: Basically everything except throwing every expensive module at it. I've fixed all the other problems with the car but I just cant get around this one. If somebody somewhere out there has any ideas please throw them out there for me. THANK YOU for all replies

Thanks tom. I have had the mirrors apart but I will most certainly do it agian to try and figure this out. Also I did read on another post about a variable resistor in the mirror that tells the ccm where park is (hints holding it in place while adjusting them). If there is such a thing is there a way to check them snd or replace them? And does anyone have an exploded view of the mirror mechanisms? Also what is the position detent spring? I'm assuming its the main big spring. If so I know that one has quite abit of tension and the collar is still seated in place. THANKS again for all the help

Also tom the mirrors are not binding, they move nice and smooth
That would be the problem.

According the info I have, there is no variable resistor in the mirror, but that could be wrong.

I don't have an exploded view, you could search Etka. I haven't had one of those apart, but I expect they would have a similar detent as the manual mirrors. What I am talking about is the thing that holds the mirror solidly in the driving position, but allows it to be pushed back or forward. (Similar to the way the doors hold in 3 different open positions).
If the mirrors have been dismantled some parts might be missing. They should not move smoothly past the driving position.

If I manually move the mirror it doesn't move unless I force it like it should. But when I use the switch they move nice and smooth no growling or any other obsene noises they just don't stop until they hit the finder (I'm sure if the fender wasn't there they would just keep going lol) and keith if you have some pictures that would be great!!

THE MIRRORS ARE FIXED! Thanks tom for your help and yes it was a mechanical problem. Deep inside the motor mechanism there is a spring loaded stop pin that was so corroded it was suck in the up or free position so the mirrors did not know where to stop. A small piece of emory cloth and a small dab of anti-seize later and now they work perfectly. Thanks you

Baha - thanks for the write up. I have a couple questions regarding your fix. I have the motor off the shaft and found the tiny black switch inside the detent used to signal motor to stop. When I hit the button the motor will go the other way, so I know it works, but it does not the stop the motor it only sends it into reverse. Any ideas? Is there a switch inside the motor housing that senses feedback pressure?

Thanks!

The mirror uses the detentes correctly and has proper pressure from spring to keep in place, but did not move smoothly before I got into it. The grease between the detent plates was hard and broken down not allowing easy movement.

A little history - I got the car used without the adjustment knob. I replaced the knob, and used the folding mirrors twice before they started to do the exorcist full 180 turn from window to fender. I assume previous owner had not used the function in quite some time so it failed quickly after a couple uses due to dried up grease. I could see the motor working to continue rotating the mirror but it was bound up once there was no more room for rotation. I could see it torquing a little until the motor timed out (?), or stopped due to increased resistance (?).

I know the black switch inside detent does work because when depressed it sends signal and motor turns in opposite direction. Just not sure how the timing sequence works? My guess would be, motor on, switch open once plate is out of detent, plate drops back into next detent for driving position and closes switch to tell motor to stop.
