Bad PCV valve?

My 2001 1.8t with AWM engine code had all the symptoms of a bad PCV valve. Shaking at idle, oil smell in car and outside, oil on the throttle body, etc. I got under the hood of the car, and unbeknownst to me, one of the previous owners had replaced the pcv system with 034 Motorsports replacement kit. Everything seemed to be fine. If it's not the pcv, then what else could it be. What should I check to get my car running correctly?

Check the rest of the system, the suction jet is also part of the PCV and often cracks without pulling apart. Not sure if the outlet hose from the PCV to the suction jet is part of the 034 kit, so check that too. The puck shaped vent valve can go bad too. I can't remember if it's on the turbo inlet hose on the early AWM, but it's easy to find under the hood.

Only if it's leaking there or under the cam chain tensioner (usually the half moon seal). I know my SJP failed out of the box, so I deleted it. It uses the brake booster to increase the suction on the PCV via a vortex design. Taking it out does not affect the braking and made the system simpler but might decrease the PCV flow slightly.
