Having issues with my relays, what relay controls the air blower ?. The air con stopped working after the relay started clicking on and off a few times. The air con was then intermittent for a while coming on and off as it pleased until eventually stopped altogether. Now there is no click when turning on the ac. I have found the relays behind the fuses drivers side and narrowed it down to 2 relays. Its either 202 or 267. Which one controls the ac ?. I may have to change the motor blower and resistor if its not the relay, but when trying to get the motor out the air bag is in the way and I cant get the fan right out, any suggestions !!! Is it safe to drop the air bag down to remove the blower ? Also the resistor is in an awkward place and again is at the top of the fan and is quite hard to get at. Do I really need to remove the airbag ?

When I remove the glove box and try to take out the fan, The bracket for the air bag is stopping the fan from pulling out. It only comes out a small bit then doesnt go any further. Also with the resistor its in a very awkward place also. I have to remove the fan to get to the resistor and the screw for the resister has a very small gap and cant even get a screwdriver to it. At least I now know that the 267 is the correct relay. I will start with that and then if thats not it I will try to remove the fan. Although when watching videos about removing the blower on other passats its slightly different from mine the videos show it to be straight forward but in my car its kind of strange

Maybe there is something different about the the TDI interior construction? If you do need to remove the airbag be certain to disconnect the battery before working with the airbag!!

Safety specifications when working on airbag
Testing, assembly and repair work should only be conducted by trained personnel.
When working on the airbag system disconnect battery Ground strap.
Waiting time is not necessary after disconnecting the battery.
When connecting the airbag system to the power source, no one should be in the interior of the vehicle.
Before installing (touching) airbag unit technician must discharge electrostatically.
This is attained, by touching Grounded metal parts, for example water lines, heater tubes or metal supports.
Install airbag units immediately after removing from transport container.
If work is interrupted place airbag unit into transport container again.
Do not leave a un-installed airbag unattended.
Airbag units should be stored in removed condition, with the cushioned side facing up.
Airbag units that drop onto a hard surface or show damage, should not be installed.

Just thought I would give an update on this, I found something very usefull about this issue.

I have replaced the relay which turns out to be fine, Not that so had to try to change the motor and get a new one.
However I had found directions on how to fix the motor itself without buying anything and really saved me some money so here is what I did for anyone else thats having issues with the blower motor.

You can remove the motor with a bit of messing around without taking out the airbag, not much room to work but it does come out eventually.
Take the motor out and you will see the 2 wires. Live/earth. Twist the plastic wire case and it will come out through the motor, On the motor there are 3 rubber seals holding the case to the motor. You can pop these out with a screwdriver and remove the case around the motor.
On the actual motor you will see 2 small silver clips that you can push off with a flat end small screwdriver. If you pop the clips off you will seee a spring behind the clip. Take out the spring on both sides.

Inside the hole there is a copper wire leading down into the hole attached to a carbon brush on the end. If you carfully take the brushes out and turn them around 180 and put them back in on both sides and put back the springs and clips then reverse everything, the Motor will now be working, put everything back in and your good to go. If anyone wants more detailed instructions then let me know. Its a real money saver took around 25 mins to do and now I have air con again.

Great work !
- Despite the tight space you still found a way to get at the defective brushes.
- You then used a creative means to fix them
- AND finally you came back here and updated your thread to make it helpful for someone else in the future.

I wish we had some openings right now cause I'd hire you.

Glad you figured out your issue, but I wanted to post for future viewers that the aircon relays have nothing to do with the blower fan.

What you did on the blower motor was simply turn around the brushes. If they are almost completely worn, your fix will be temporary at best. You can likely find suitable replacement brushes at a decent hardware store, and they should be relatively inexpensive. Many older power tools had the ability to replace the brushes once they were worn.

yes thats my next step, the brushes where worn and I will need to replace them. This is far better than buying a new motor. As a quick fix this was great. At the min there is very heavysnow here and cant tell you how good it is to have a clear window and some heat . The brushes are around ÂŁ10 - ÂŁ15
