Are wal-mart's super tech oil filters too good to be true?

I have heard a number of people compare the wal-mart super tech oil filter that has an abnoxiously low price, to the bosch oil filters in terms of quality. This almost sounds too good to be true, but apparently Wal-Mart's Super Tech oil filters are made by champion labs which manufactures mobil1 oil filters and bosch. Does anyone know about the wal-mart super tech's? Thanks for any insights.

Having worked for Wal-mart I find it hard to believe they would use anything of quality if a cheaper alternative is available. If you said the super techs were a bosch housing with papertowels inside I wouldn't be overly surprised :)

Just my .02

If I can find a Super Tech oil filter for the VR6, I'll do a subjective inspection of one and give a report.

The 95 B4 VR6 uses an open element with metal end caps...I'll be able to inspect the pleats, glue, metal stampings etc. I'll also keep an eye out for the evil "Made In China" inscription. :suspicio:

Just cuz its made by the same company that makes for a reputable one doesn't mean its also good. There is filter media issues (Quality of paper) and on top of that how many folds or sq. feet of media. These are called "spec" filters .. made to the buyer specs.

Because of some unusual circumstances, I had an oil change done at Wal Mart with one of the Supertech filters. (I usually do my own changes). While I was waiting, I went to the shelves with the oil filters and read the info on the box of the Supertech oil filter. Looks like the filter is well made with both a bypass valve and an anti-drainback valve. Beyond looking at the features on the box and not having any problems with the filter, I don't know how well constructed it is.
