I ran on water for a good month once.......in the summer of course. :)
Straight water is not a good idea. Antifreeze also provides lubrication and anticorrosion.

Just add water to top it off, but if you need to add a lot, have it flushed to proper ratio. I don't recall what the range is, but 50%-70% antifreeze sounds familiar. Driving rich on water for a while until you can order or go by a dealer should be fine.

I also recommend that once you get it sorted out, that you pick up a gallon of the G12 coolant, along with a one gallon plastic container. Pour half the G12 into the one gallon container and fill up the rest with water. Now fill up the empty half of the G12 bottle with water and you'll have two gallons of premixed coolant ready to go. Keep one in the car and the other one on a high shelf in the garage so that pets/kids don't get to it.

Distilled water is not required on any VW or Audi except for the Vanagon (I honestly don't know why this is, but it is). Using distilled water is a good idea, as it has fewer particulants than tap water, but ordinary water will do. I've also topped off with bottled water (Aquafina) since its nothing more than filtered tap water.

I can just see a new Aquafina commercial now featuring a bunch of singing VW's downing the drink via their (non-existant) radiator caps in a crowded speisgarten. :D
