Alignment or Steering Wheel?

ok so here's the story:

Last night i parked my car with the passenger side wheel on some snow and my wheel turned towards the drivers side. This morning, i get in the car to drive it and my steering wheel needs to be turned almost all the way left in order to go straight. Now i'm guessing i may have screwed the alignment up by parking in the snow with my wheel turned. But i needed some expert advice before i go and get an alignment done.

any input?

Yeah, don't drive the car - obviously. If you can't maneuver freely, you're a danger to yourself and everyone on the road. Get a tow to where ever.

What you're describing should not have happened from leaving the wheel cocked, snow or no. Either someone hit your car overnight, or something in the steering or suspension co-incidentally came apart. I'd poke around underneath to look, but count on a trip to a qualified VW specialist.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS:

i parked the car on all fours with the wheel turned the opposite way. I just went back to the car and straightened the steering wheel out and it's straight as hell. so now i don't know if something froze over night and loosened up or what the story is but any insight would be appreciated.

Also, note that the car drives and behaves normally.

NEWER DEVELOPMENT:

After them centering i took it for a short spin again to see if it would stay centered and it doesn't. I would say that to go straight, the steering wheel has to be turned almost 1/4th of the way left. I took it to an empty parking lot and was driving it to see if it responded different to turning and what not. The wierd thing is that the car drives like it normally does except with the wheel turned 1/4 of the way left. Is it possible that due to the cold weather and the situation above that the clockspring in the steering wheel got stuck and allowed me to take the steering wheel out of alignment? Any input is greatly appreciated.

I'll be frank: I have no idea how it happened, but if your statements are accurate - "almost all the way left in order to go straight" and "has to be turned almost 1/4th of the way left" - then your steering wheel is no longer firmly connected to the mechanism; the alignment is shifting on a continuing basis. The clockspring has nothing to do with that, it's just for electrical contacts (airbag, etc.).

How about if you lose steering entirely while driving? Until you get it figured out and fixed, please don't drive the car!

I work at a dealer so it's In our shop right now. They're gonna check it out and do an alignment and what not. I dont see how this could coincidentally happen just like it did but I guess anything is possible

According to the tech everything is hooked up. However the alignment is off and the subframe needs adjusting. So they're doing that now. Any way to adjust the steering angle sensor without vagcom?

Sorry for my typing on this post I'm doing it from my iPhone
