Air bag fault after flooding

Hi every one

I bought a 2004 Passat that had the pass side floor boards flooded. I pulled the seats and carpet and put a heater in the car to dry it out.
I then replaced the transmission control module be cause it was full of water and causing all kinds of dash lights being on.
After installing the new module I only had a check engine light on and the air bag light. After starting the car a couple times the check
engine light went out and only the air bag light was left. I talk to a mechanic at the locale VW dealership and he said the sensor on the floor
would be ok but would need the contacts cleaned. So I cleaned the contacts and installed the seats but the air bag light is still on. I disconnected both terminals
of the battery for 30 seconds then touched them together for another 30 seconds. Re connected the battery turned ignition on for 15 seconds and started the car.
Light is still on. I guess my next step is top hook it up the scanner and check codes and clear the fault. Is there any way to clear the air bag fault with out a scanner.

Thanks Mark:bowdown:

If I were you, I'd look for a way to scan the entire car with either the dealer computer or with VCDS. There are several control modules throughout the car and those two systems I mentioned are capable of interrogating all the modules to see what clues they are trying to offer.

The Air Bag Control Module might not respond to a battery disconnect and capacitive discharge like some other modules do. I imagine, for most fault codes, that module will try to pester you as much as it can till you get someone more equipped to look into it.

Car needs to be scanned as mentioned then you can see what codes are for the air bag. Hopefully is thrown a code because (as I've read here) you disconnected the seats airbag without disconnecting the battery 1st and possibly had the ignition in the on position or started the car.

I had to remove my steering wheel a few times. The 1st time I did I got the air bag light because I didn't disconnect the battery 1st and started the car.

Anytime you are dealing with airbags it is imaparritive that you disconnect the battery for safety reasons.

Yup I was in a hurry to get the carpets out and did not disconnect the battery(lesson learned)
I also started the engine while trying to clear up the transmission control module codes.
I will try to get a scanner over the weekend.
I will disconnect the battery when I pull the seats to reinstall the carpets.

lol Yes I think I have the water problem figured out but I am going to leave the carpets out for now.
After a couple of good rain falls and I know for sure that it is not leaking I will put them back in.
My boss let me bring the shop scanner home for the week end so if things go right I should have the air bag codes cleared it a couple hours.

Happy times :):)
Hooked up the scanner and cleared the codes.
Lights are off and did not come back after running for 10 minutes.
Time to get plates and drive the new toy.
I can not believe I am hoping for some heavy rain fall to make sure the leaks are fixed.:puke:

I did pull the battery and tray. There was rust on the battery tray but none on the body. I checked two drains and ran a garden hose in there for about five minutes. Drains were working fine.
The two front sunroof drain were also clean but the rubber seemed to be stuck together until I squeezed them. What I am unsure of is if the water came in through the fan as there was water in the housing. The windshield was replaced and who ever did it did a crappy job. The glue is smeared all along the bottom of the trim retainer and does leak air in that area. They also broke the lower windshield trim under the wiper on the passenger's side. I think possibly water might be getting in through the broken trim as water should not run up hill under the windshield. I still have to check the rear sunroof drains.

I did take it out for the first time last night in the snow and was quite surprised. Goes great in the snow and drives great. Really happy with it just need it to warm up so I can get back to checking for leaks.
