Reference: '99 audi 1.8t AEB using new OEM AWP harness(PN 1J0 971 658L).This is to allow you to run FSI, TSI, or R8 coil packs.
For anyone else who wants to do this, here you go!

the #1 wires for each coil pack im going to use heat shrink butt connectors from the AWP harness to the pre-exisiting corresponding AEB black w/blue tracer wires.

the #2 wires are actually one wire. it is the big brown wire from the AWP harness. you can simply ground that to the block or chassis, or you can heat shrink butt connect it to the pre-exisiting AEB big brown ground wire that originally ran to the ICM.

the #3 wires go to the corresponding original Green/White Tracer, Red/Grey Tracer, Yellow/Grey Tracer, Grey/Yellow Tracer wires that lead to the ICM in the AEB harness.

the #4 wire is just the ground to the original ground spot on the valve cover.

the small tan wire coming out of the back of the AWP harness gets grounded to the back of the head, use a round terminal heat shrink connector for it.

Take your AWP harness(PN 1J0 971 658L) and strip/cut off everything not being use until you have only four Black w/Purple tracer wires(one for each coil, label them now, it will make life easier later in the conversion), one thick Brown wire, one thin Purple w/Black tracer wire, one thin Black w/Yellow tracer wire, one thin Black w/Brown tracer wire, one thin Black w/Purple tracer wire, one thin Tan wire, and the one wire that comes out by coil pack one with the terminal ring on it. It should look something like this when you are done.

Locate your ICM, its on top of your airbox, if you still have one. Slice open the wiring loom from the 5 pin clip on the ICM to the back of the head all the way to the Y section. Cut off the five wires at that clip that plugs into the ICM. Take those five wires(Green/White Tracer, Red/Grey Tracer, Yellow/Grey Tracer, Grey/Yellow Tracer, and thick Brown) and put them to the side, you will be using these. Take the ICM, the 4 pin clip and wires, follow these back to the Y and cut them off there, they are trash and you wont be using these any more. Say bye-bye to the faulty ICM.

Slice open your original AEB coil pack harness at the clips to the Y one at a time and label the Black w/Blue tracer wires for each cylinder. The Black w/Blue tracer wires are the only wires you need from the original AEB coil pack harness, so follow the remaining wires back to the Y, cut them there, and throw them in the trash. Should look a lot like this.

Slide your heat shrink tubing over these wires before you connect them. Take your heat shrink butt connectors and go to town. Follow the above color-coded chart I made. When you are done connecting the wires, give the car a test start to make sure it works before you put the heatgun to your heat shrink tubing. Again, should look similar to this.

After you confirmed a start-up, shut the engine down, slide your heat shrink tubing in place, and hit it with the heatgun.
You can cut the threads off the heat shield that came with the AWP harness and use it to cover the coil pack harness on top of the valve cover.
Should look like it came from the factory when you are done. Enjoy!

hope this helps out. any questions feel free to ask. :wrench:

I never claimed that it was the same way. Just thought it'd help you out.

i guess i worded it wrong. i was just saying his way was totally different than im trying to do, i already have the AWP harness to splice in to my pre-existing AEB harness. I do appreciate you taking the time to link it up and try to help me out though!

Here is what I did yesterday.
that is a 99 passat 1.8t AEB, but your donor harness is clearly not an AWP harness.

can i kindly ask you to remove these pics as they are wrong for the conversion i am going to do the write-up for? i appreciate your help, but its only going to confuse other members and thats exactly what i am trying to avoid.

i would like this thread to be as accurate as possible as my instructions pertain to 98/99 AEB(but possibly 97 aeb too) while using AWP harness to run FSI/R8 coil packs. hence the title. Thanks!
here is the chart that pertains to AEB to AWP harness swap.

The black/purple is coil pin one. They need to go to black/blue at the "y" behind the head. One for each coil.
figured out already, read post#6:wrench:

pics to come

There conflicting instructions with the black w/purple tracer wires. OP in the audizine write-up says split them, while the passatworld one mentions nothing about it. Neither of these write-ups are clear in what to do. So what is the right way to do this?

Thanks in advance.
