Hi everyone!

I feel like I'm CarTalk for some reason since I'm new to the forum scene. I have a 2001 Passat GLX FWD which I got last December and I'm wondering what some "Go to" things are to do in terms of maintenance. Anyways, I know enough to be dangerous in terms of repairing things myself and would like to learn more. There are somethings I can do and others I just don't feel comfortable tinkering with since it is my daily driver and way to work.

So far I've done the following repairs and I know nothing about the repair history at all.

- Replaced oil cooler (Since it was leaking oil into the coolant system)
- Chemically flushed cooling system
- Front Passenger side axel since the CV boot was busted
- Rear brakes (rotors and pads)
- Oil changes of course

What's wrong so far is the ac doesn't work and the fan squeals at mid-speed. I've been told it's probably the compressor but I'm sure I can find more info on here =)

What I would like to ask, is are there any go-to things that I should tend to immediately that I could do myself.

I know there are somethings, like timing belt and thing like that are on the list but are also expensive. I'm thinking of less obvious things that need fixing.

@Superiormarine I have the 2.8L V6. It' s the GLX with pretty much every option imaginable on it. I had the rear main seal (I think?) replaced in spring because when I left work one night I found the whole engine worth of oil had spilled out into the parking lot at work.

Also changed the fuel filter this weekend. I don't think it's ever been changed. This is what came out of the filter! I'll mark the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat on the top of my list.
