Hi everyone,

2003, 1.8t

For the first time last night I did get the oil pressure and stop light cruising at around 1600rpm. Today I got an Equus oil pressure gauge from autozone. Removed the oil pressure switch and saw that the back inside of it, where the harness is connected, is full of oil, which makes me think the switch is on its way out.
I temporarily Installed the gauge and did some testing. Here are the results.

Cold idle: 60 psi
Cold 2000 rpm : 70psi
Hot idle: 26 psi
Hot 2000 rpm : 58 psi
Hot 3000 rpm: 62 psi

I have yet to install the pressure switch along with the gauge but I couldn’t find a tee adapter. I will get one after the new year.

Given the readings, can I assume it’s the switch that’s triggering the light?

I have had this car for the last 2500 miles and never got that light. The previous owner told me he didn’t either.
Using 5W-40 liquo moly and Mann filter.

Thanks a bunch.

Thank you for the reply. Do you know if ATW engines have a secondary port on the oil cooler where I can install the gauge into? I am not sure if the T fitting may alter the readings.

the only other outlet besides the oil switch is the banjo bolt that feeds into the turbo. I guess the ATW does not have the extra plug like AEB.
Any other comments on the readings?

Those pressure readings are great.
And, the pressure switch isn't "on the way out" - it's done. Oil on the wire side = internal leak. It's dead, Jim. Get a new one.

Aftermarket switches can be hit or miss (years of personal experience.) Dealer bits (here) are reasonably priced, and a lot more reliable.

UPDATE:
So I used the other hole and installed the gauge. While installing, I removed the fuel line for easy access. It reads much higher pressure, like 80psi cold start than the pressure switch hole.

The BAD:

I finished installation, cranked the car it struggled but started with engine shaking, hesitating low rpm almost dies!
Give gas, rpm goes up but goes back to shaky motor, hesitating rpm. MIL blinks . VCDS Reads multiple misfires, cylinder 2,3,4 misfire.
It’s around 32 here and I suspected of the battery. It reads 11.6V engine off, when engine starts goes up to 13.6V.

The boost gauge shows 10hg, below the hg-psi 0. It normally stays at 20hg at idle.

For the last couple of starts there was occasional blue plume of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. It doesn’t burn oil.

I changed the timing belt about 2000 miles ago but the engine was very strong, boost going up 11psi. I am hoping it hasn’t skipped tooth or something. I have driven mostly highway speeds with no problem at all.

I feel very down! :( after all I have done on this car, this happens.

Your help is appreciated!

Thank you.
The port I tapped the gauge into displays much higher oil pressure figures than the port which the pressure sender is screwed into.
Cold idle tops 80psi, revving maxes it out, 100psi.
Thoughts?

Got this from another site. Oil pressure spec for the 1.8s

Cold Idle: ~80 psi
Cold 2k rpms: ~90 psi
Cold 3k rpms: ~100psi (pegs the gauge)

Hot Idle: ~24 psi
Hot 2k rpms: ~50 psi
Hot 3k rpms: ~70 psi
Hot at redline can still peg the gauge (100 psi)
