I just took my 99 Passat in to the dealer after the oil pressure light came on and my engine started to lock up. I have 88,000 miles on my car and am the original owner. My dealer has asked for proof of maintanence. I found 11 reciepts for oil changes. Am I going to have trouble getting this taken care of under waranty or am I going to have to fight with the dealer? Anybody else gone thru this experience?

I never keep mine, and it seems stupid to have to. The only purpose I see that serving is to try and get people to use the dealer for service so they can maintain records.

Piss on them, if it was done, then make the documentation. No one in their right mind has the time or desire to maintain perfect records on everything we do. I change my own oil every 5,000 miles with synthetic. What they want my oil receipts? Heck, I own more than one car and buy lots of oil....what good would it be to show that I bought 60 qts of oil in the past 2 years. It is not like the engine wouldn't be full of sludge if the oil were never changed.

11 receipts, times 5000 miles per interval means you have records for about 60000 of those miles, give or take. it sounds like you are missing some records, if that is the case, are there any big gaps that they could probably point to as the cause, or did you stretch intervals out a little bit?

Let me guess… you have a 1.8T… correct?

Has the "oil pump" problem been diagnosed yet?

Is the car at the dealer? Did they drop the pan?

You can supply them with all the maintenance in the world… if there is sludge the motor is SOL.

If you can answer the above questions, I'll elaborate further…

Yes I have a 1.8 T.

They have not mentioned sludge yet. I will give them the maitanence records this morning. So far they have said oil pump and turbo. It sounds like you have had a similar situation. Please let me know their tricks.

Hmmm... I'd be interested in knowing if these two incidents involved the use of non-synthetic oil?
It appears the 1.8T, with its low oil capacity and high oil temperatures can turn dino oil into sludge.

you'll have a pretty hard time getting it warrantied if you didn't follow the maintenance schedule at all. i'm sure pushing it you'd be fine, if they find 10000+ mile gaps in oil & filter changes you might be the one SOL

and to not keep receipts, that's just plain DUMB.

I noticed when I was at Douglas VW in Summit, NJ, recently they had a letter-board up behind the service counter listing standard services including an "Oil Flush" rather than the more typical "Oil Change".

This was the first time I'd ever heard this procedure called an "Oil Flush"...I don't know if it means anything and I didn't ask, because I was distracted with other matters, but anyway, I found it interesting.

Are any dealers starting to actually "flush" the oil now by running a bit of auto tranny fluid through there before refill or something?

It's not tranny fluid, it is a specialized oil sludge solvent, used with special equipment.

However, if you change your oil on time every time, a VW owner should NEVER need this service.

Other makes do, though.

I have recently had this problem of the oil light coming on, but only for a few seconds and then it would turn off. I checked the dip stick and found no oil on it at all. The first time this happened, I brought it to the dealer several days later for my regular oil change interval (coincidence in timing). They said they inspected the engine and saw no visible leaks.

Two months later, after approximately 2k miles since the oil change, the light goes on again (and promptly off). I again check the oil level and it the dip stick shows no oil again. I fill it with less than a quart and the dip stick shows filled.

5 days later it happens again. Now I am pissed and concerned. I call the dealer and this past Tuesday, I brought it in. They wanted to perform a oil consumption test; basically, perform an oil change and bring it back every 1k to see the rate of consumption. While they were doing the work, they notice that the valve cover gasket was leaking as well as a gasket for the cam pretensioner. They replaced all of this under the powertrain warranty. I also asked them to do my timing belt since they were already there. While doing that, they noticed that the water pump had a little play in it, so they replaced that under warranty.

However, and I am sorry for digressing, the original oil problem still has me concerned. I had no leaks on my driveway, garage or office parking space. I haven't smelled any oil burning, so where did it go? I will be a little more vigilant over the next few thousand miles on monitoring the oil level. Oh, btw, I use synthetic, not dino.

I hope this helps.

i feel your pain, but this might bright the horizan, i had the same problem around 40K and had no problem what so ever with them coving it on warranty. the only difference i can think is that this is my secound vw from this shop and maybe they wanted to keep me happy. either way they should cover this, they covered mine, as well as replacing my turbo, and down pipe at the same time(all warr). good luck
