Hey guys, :)
I am from Houston bought my Passat a month back, Its a B5.5 2004 1.8T GLS with 76K miles on it. The car runs great, but after reading through the forum I am a bit concerned about the future. Especially because I dont have any warrenty left on it. I was considering buying an extended warrenty but, then thought otherwise :hmmm:. (around $3000 for 3 yrs) What do you guys think about this? Should I go for an extended warrenty for the car? Currently I haven't noticed any problems with the car. It is a pleasure to drive! :driving: I just ordered a front grille for the car, because it got a couple of chips off from it and it doesnt look good. its for $87, from germanautoparts.com. Well I had already read many threads here and got a lot of information about the car. I really dont have many pics to share with you guys, but I will surely upload some more soon for the time being... here is the one. I hope I will get a valuable information from you all time to time.

Cheers!!

Hey WOOPS, looks like you and I bought our B5.5's about the same time. I got mine the every end of May, and sounds like you got yours around the first of June. I have 63k on the clock, and out of warranty too. Now I do have a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) warranty but it's not much. And I too am concerned with some of the potential problems which may be lurking in the future.

The guys here have pretty much helped me over my fears. I think if you keep up with preventative maintenance, (Timing Belts, water pump, oil changes) that we will have a good driving reliable machine. Let's keep in touch since I am not able to find anyone around Utah that seems to care about their cars the way I do.

Hey good to know buddy... well I got mine on 16th of June well I already checked with the dealer yesterday my car is with them for the recalls and they are saying that it is going to cost me around $1200 bucks!! only for the timing belt replacement (which I am not sure is in what shape) and the 80K service is going to cost somewhat around $600. I know it is a lot but I checked with a volkswagen maintenance store here, which can do the service for $480 including all the replacement of parts, but I still want to know about the timing belt. I am really concerned about it I am surely going to get it checked by a professional and then decide about the same.

If you are even marginally handy with a wrench then don't bother with the extended warranty. I can't think of anything, short of rebuilding a Tip, that hasn't been written about here.
Hey quality,
Just want to let you know I love working on my machines, and I am pretty good at it also. But I am not sure about this german machine. By the way it relates to my profession also, I am a mechanical engineer :) thanks for the suggestions.

Congrats and welcome, great looking car! It seems like the mod bug has got you already. I am surprised the pollen filter recall hadn't been done sooner.
Yaa... the bug has already poisioned me :) Actually I already went to a shop for getting the H7 siverstar's for the car. But then got to know that it have those HID's on it which are going to cost a hell lot... so dropped the plan for the time being. Since there are a lot of things to be done on the car related to maintenance. Thanks for the comments :)

The going rate for the Timing Belt seems to be somewhere between 600 and 800 depending on the part of the country. I started calling around independent shops here in Salt Lake City, and found that the quote was from about 650.00 on the low end, to $1000.00 at the dealer. The trick is to know what other things to do while the car is open for the timing belt. The guys here have helped me with this. Seems you wanna replace the water pump and use the after market one which has a METAL impeller, and replace the tensioner spring plus all the other belts at the same time. Makes sense to me and when I have mine done, I will do all of that.

Another suggestion which has been made here, is sometimes you can find a place which will allow you to bring the parts. That could save you some money because you can buy a timing belt "KIT" with all the parts needed for about 300.00 Just some suggestions to help you ease the blow of a rather expensive service.

That makes sense to me... what about the KIT?? do you got to know its specifications? I guess we will have to match those parts with the desired ones for the car. Any place to get it from?

I would get it here. They're in San Antonio, and usually deliver within 2-3 days of the order... and its the complete kit for $225.

Also, PM sent.

It's not a matter of getting it checked by a professional.....its getting it done...seriously a lot of folks that frequent this forum will tell you VW was way off in their recomendation for the TB.... if you are in the 75k+ range with the milage it should be taken care of ASAP think of it this way you shouldn't ask if it will because it is..... and it isn't always just the belt that goes its the moving part that fails causing the TB to go tits up.

Anyhow welcome to PW as you can see there is tons of knowledge within these walls.... you have got a little taste of how expensive some of the mods can be for our cars.... So good luck with yours .... I have 3 pointers for you...1.ALWAYS try and research your questions out before asking...keep in mind you will/should have lots of questions.... chances are they have been asked more than enough times...
2. Get a second job...you will need the money :)
3. if you take care of your Passat she will take care of you...meaning get the oil changed when you are supposed to and make sure you use the right stuff...ect ect

GL with the car and remember to have fun with it:salute:

Thanks for the advice, now I will surely do the TB change along with my 80K service (which I am going to do sooner) But, I am really not sure that whether the previous owner did that or not.. is there a way to check for the water pump and also for the TB??
