Power Steering Fluid

My power steering fluid is almost gone in my B5. I have not checked it since i bought it in March and I am now noticing that it needs some. Which brand do i need because i know that it has to be a specific type but i am not sure exactly what it is. Could someone help me out...?

Pentosin CHF-11s. I believe Febi also makes a compatible fluid.

"Hydraulic Mineral Fluid" the book says. That could describe darned near anything, so I went to the dealer and got "VW/Audi Power Steering Fluid", part number G 002 012.

They've updated the dealer part number and my dealer now gives G 004, but it's the same stuff, or at least compatible...

When mine was leaking over the winter I just used Pennzoil generic fluid, it didn't seem to have any adverse affect. But now my pump is about to quit on me because when it was leaking I think I might have ran it dry for a week or so.

I think the destruction of your pump would be considered an adverse effect.

found it at local NAPA like place that nkew vw's. pretty expensive stuff considering domestic fluid is like 3 bucks. this is ten times that and certainly did not have it at Pep Boys

Yup, this is the same car that takes expensive synthetic motor oil and special extremely expensive ATF. At least I get by on $5/quart Valvoline Synpower brake fluid.

I've seen the CHF 11S as cheap as $13 or $14 per litre online. Dealers run about $18 around here. You need about 1 1/2 litres to do a complete flush, so 2 cans required. You'll have some left for top off should you need it. Since you likely only have to do this every 4 or 5 years, spending $40 or less for some PS fluid beats the heck out of spending $1000 plus for a new rack and related equipment. It's about the same cost as a synthetic oil change for materials, and you can provide the labor as it's an easy DIY.

Buy Pentosin CHF-11s.
You need to remove the belly pan and inspect the clamps down there where the rubber hoses connect to fluid supply and return lines (metal tubes).

ok, went to my local NAPA store in town, did not have any and the guy there was trying to sell me the NAPA brand power steering fluid and was telling me that it would work fine.....Right....SO then i went to the VW dealership and bought it for $20. Easy enough...should have just gone there in the first place...thanks guys.

Good for you. As rarely as you need to replace it, no reason to sweat paying a little more than you'd like at the dealer...
