Let's get this out of the way. If they were black, he wouldn't have rescued them.
Ugh, that'll be the media spin on it: "Zimmerman ruthlessly hunts down and murders young African American boy; saves white family from car crash."

God I was hoping this thread died.

Racism today is very different than it was before/during the civil rights movement. Research has suggested it is no longer based on hatred, as the term "rascism" usually suggests. Instead it has more to do with automatic assumptions people make without realizing it, and without questioning those assumptions even if they do realize they are making them. It is possible to be a good hearted, well meaning individual who honestly opposes racism of any kind, yet still display racist behavior and thought without knowing it.

Unfortunately, the term "racism" is a loaded one, bringing to mind white robes, the deep south, rednecks with rebel flags, and skinheads, etc, which almost completely fails to describe most people committing racist acts. A better term would be "racial prejudice". It occurs across all socio-economic and racial groups. Nobody is immune. I don't have time right now to link to the studies and their conclusions, but they should be easy enough to find online. Read them, then go back over the news about Trayvon's killing, news about/during/after the trial, and the various discussion threads you may have read on the subject. I honestly believe only the most obtuse among us could do so and not see racism at play.

^ Very valid and good points you made.

I still think we should let this thread die though, it'll just keep going forever.

Definitely multiple elements of racism in the case, but the piece I think most folks have the most difficulty with is evaluating Zimmerman's motivations and state of mind leading up to the killing. He at least claims and the circumstances support a stated purpose for his original engagement with Martin, not like he was pumping gas or something when the encounter took place. But from the moment of the killing forward, almost every element of the investigation and court proceedings was handled with media and public scrutiny that centered on the possible racial elements. For many it's just a foregone conclusion that race played a major part in the events and if that's your starting point, you'll never get past it because it's not something that can be proven.

I'll disagree. there's lots to be learned, even if not everyone agrees with the discussion for whatever reasons. we can all learn from this.

besides, who died and left you in charge? ;)

The sad part is that if you swapped skin colors and zimmerman was found guilty, the same people (i.e. Sharpton) would be bitching about that too and claiming the Stand Your Ground law should have protected him.

Absolutely. "Stand your ground only applies if you're white!" Likewise, if both were black or both white, it wouldn't be an issue. There's so few killings/incidents that fit these parameters, it makes you wonder why so much attention, if not of course for the perceived racism.

That's why these debates get to be pointless. The skin color of the participants takes priority over ALL other facts and the context of the situation. It starts with skin color and it goes from there. And, yes, skin color is the key. Exact racial genetic profile not required.

And for your viewing pleasure. Some interesting stuff in here and I loved the ending. BUT, it made the outrage worse because these facts were not permitted in court.

Haha, that can be arranged. ;)
you'll have to torture me to get my password, and then kill me. not sure you're up to it, junior. :poke:

seriously, the thread will die a natural death all on its own. you don't have to declare it dead.

Not to argue with that video, (because I do agree with a lot of what's in there) but that information was not permissible in court for legal reasons. There are guidelines when you introduce evidence into a court case, you can't just pass on anything through for the jurors to see.

If there's a thread that needs to die, it is the speeding ticket thread, that thread has become a complete train wreck. :wrench:
