On the search for one for my son. It’s got to be in decent shape, and something I can quickly and cheaply bring up to snuff for MD inspection.

Need:
  • Wagon preferred
  • No large rips or tears in seats
  • Auto trans and must not have any issues shifting
  • Prefer 1.8T and definitely no W8
  • Needs no major repairs. If needs shocks/control arms/brakes not an issue.
  • Must be drivable to Baltimore area as I can’t/won’t get a trailer. I’d pick up of course.
  • Any color
  • Cloth or leather, not picky
  • Paint not much of a concern, but rust is a big turnoff
  • No major dents
  • Clean non-salvage title

I have a budget of about $4k cash for now. I looked into a couple near me and they are not responding

Damn, I thought you'd be able to take the Pacific Blue W8 off my hands. ;)

My kids went through 2 clutches on 2 cars while they were staying with us during the pandemic. A lot of it was my son's fiance since she gets carsick if she's not driving but still.......some folks just never seem to get the hang of it.

I think he can get it down, but people around here are so crazy driving, I would rather him get the basics of driving in traffic down and pick up the ability to drive manual later.

My older son found it easier to learn on my car with the stock 1.8T and 4Mo as it was less powerful, had a less sensitive gas pedal, and didn't jump if you let out the clutch too quickly or gave it too much gas. The V6 fwd will easily spin the tires if you give it gas while letting out the clutch. I never taught my younger son to drive a stick, but being a drummer, I expect it would be simple for him.

Bringing this one around full circle.

I picked up an 07 2.5 Jetta last night with 139K that was pretty solid. The more I thought of it, the B5.5 might be a little too much for my kid to handle, maintenance wise. Mine is not my daily, so it can sit while I contemplate repairs. It wouldn't be that way for him. Also, parts aren't cheap, as we all know. EVERYTHING is cheap for the MKVs and even easier to replace. Plus, the 2.5 is super reliable and takes regular gas. With college coming up, I can't have that nagging thought in the back of my head that some looming repair would be on the horizon.

The more I dug into it last night, the better I am feeling about it. The vacuum pump is bone dry on the outside (common problem), it has newer coil packs, no leaks anywhere, no rust, and it only maybe needs brakes, maybe a couple of tires, and some stuff up front to cure a creaking/groaning sound on acceleration, deceleration, and turns. I drove it 1.5hrs home on the highway, so I had time to figure things out. Interior is almost mint. The carfax was spotless and it looks to have had regular services at the dealer.
