Windshield wiper stops vertical vs. horizontal

Searched all day on this yesterday and could only find info on wiper blades and motor/linkage. It doesn't seem like my issue pertains to either of those...so on with my issue...my wipers are CRAZY! They seem confused. When shutting the wipers off they stop in the vertical position versus the usual horizontal position.

Would anyone have any idea on how to fix this annoying issue? It doesn’t seem like a motor issue since they still work at all speeds but they just stop vertical. Only thing I’ve done is disco the battery for 15 mins hoping the computer reset would help...it didn’t, ugh. Could it be the linkage?

Thanks for any help in advance, and also a special thanks to all that has helped me and my car related issues in the past!

ttt for any help or guidance.
Sounds like the linkage is seizing up on you. You need a new one. It wasn't cheap when I got mine a few years ago, it was almost $600 parts and labour for me at a VW dealer.
ewwww...great... thanks for the response. i'll do some look'n and i'll post once i get it figured out for future reference.
I'm guessing it's the motor and not the linkage. I've got the same problem with my GTI.
It's going to be the motor. If the linkage was "seized up" then you'd either have no wiper movement or very slow wipers because of the resistance. There is a mechanical part inside the wiper motor that allows voltage to stay supplied until the wipers reach the seated position.
wiper issues

sorry to hijack the thread but I m having issues with the wipers when I use the intermittent switch on the wiper lever it s temperamental and slow then med then slow then med ..... is the switch stuck or need cleaning with some electrical cleaner solution?

Is it a GLX with rain detecting wipers? That'll change the speed automatically for you. At least that's the way my car works. It almost seems like my intermittent does nothing cause it changes with the speed of the car and the amount of rain.

BTW, op I have the same issue with my rear wiper. It'll occasionally stop anywhere for a brief time and then continue. I just automatically assumed it was the motor going bad. My front windshield wipers work fine though.
Well, to check out the linkage, look at the arm that connects to the linkage at the motor. If it is pointing toward the right (passenger) side if the car, the motor is stopping where it should.

If it's pointing to the opposite side, then the motor is not stopping where it should.

The pivots can get corroded and bind, which will eventually kill the motor. You can take them apart and lube them, or just give them a healthy dose of PB Blaster.

If your linkage moves freely but you still have issues, you will need a new motor.
interesting mine is a GLX but I had no idea that it had that in that model it s aggrava/ting mode lol needless to say while on the subject where is the sensor located

Yeah, it freaked me out when I first got my car as well but seems to work well for a 12 year old car. I think the sensor is in back of your auto dim mirror. I believe it'll be a liitle dot. You can probably see it if you're in front of the car and look at the mirror.
Be sure your passenger windshield wiper is long enough to swipe in front of the sensor which is behind the rear-view mirror. My stock wiper when I bought my 03 new was not long enough and the wipers did not work right until I realized the rain was never getting wiped off in front of the sensor. Switched to a 22" wiper and it works well.
