Wheel Bearing (Dealer Quote) BS??

1153 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  crash893
I just called my local dealer on a quote to get my left front wheel bearing replaced. I was told that the bearing / hub need to be replaced together and an alignment would also need to be done. Total cost = $643.09

My question is whether these do need to be replaced as a unit? (bearing/hub) My guess is no, because I have seen just the bearings for sale on numerous web sites, wit no mention of the hub for about $50-60 per side.

This included an alignment as well? Is the alignment necessary if just the bearing can / would be done?

Thanks for any info.

It's common practice to replace the race as well as the bearing, but not necessary. So it's your call -vs- their call, they aren't trying to scam you.

If you do have the race replaced also just hope they can get it out... if not it's a whole new steering knuckle... replacing all 3 is about a grand with labor.
The bearing may be pressed out of the hub and a new one put in. Perhaps your dealer is simply admitting they don't have a press.

A couple hundred bucks for bearing replacement is more like it, parts and labor included.
my haynes manaul states replacing the bearing should be done by a mechanic, but recommends removing the hub assembly, and taking it to a mechanic to save on costs. Does anyone have an objection to that procedure? I'm about to undertake on this procedure.

Just mark your raised toe depth very carefully before you pull the tie rod end out of the knuckle and put it back just as you found it.

Even doing that, I'd have it aligned afterward.

I just replace two bearings in my 00 Passat, its pretty simple to do, exept, you have to press the bearings, with labor and parts its should be $140 per side no more than that. As far as alignment I personally would recomend alignment, its only $40.

So It sould $280 for 2 sides, including parts and labor, more than than is rip off.

Eugene
