well heres the list of tools i have bought in 2004:
-Palm sander(craftsmen)
-Jigsaw(craftsmen)
-14.4V Cordless Drill(craftsmen)
-10.8V Cordless drill(craftsmen)
-100 piece Tap and die set
-36 piece drill bit set(mastercraft)
-Jigsaw bits(mastercraft)
-GearWrench----sizes 8 to 19 (craftsmen)
-the Bolt extractor kit from Sears AS SEEN ON TV and they work well too!
-6 pc Plier Set
-2nd stand alone tool box-6 drawer.
and some other stuff.

the thing is last year i took the AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNICIEN course and the tools i buy are a tax writeoff up to 65% for the next 3 years, so i might as well take advantage of the fact they thing im an apprentis mechanic :) .
and there is also the fact that i am alowed to take the tax advantage for the tools for one year if i don't become an apprenti, only a specialized worker.

pass-variant, I hate to rain on your parade, but at least go buy a real impact.

An IR231 is a respectable choice.

Wait till HermanH says what he's bought in the last year.....

Me? The only work I've done on the Passat was get some washing supplies at AutoZone, along with some pads and compound to try to buff out some of the major scratches we bought the car with.

Haven't bought any new tools for the car, YET. I already have quite a few metric Craftsman wrenches, sockets, allen keys, etc. from owning multiple VW's.
I did get a new DeWalt DW621 Plunge Router  for Christmas! My wife is the COOLEST!

Every time I use my IR231 I thank myself for sucking it up and splurging on it years ago.
