I went to my dealer to buy bellypan fasteners a couple of weeks ago (only to find a whole set for $10 on ECS Tuning a week later :banghead: ), and the exploded diagram the parts guy printed out for me showed a second bellypan that covers the area of the underbody between the steering rack and the back edges of the front seats. It's listed as being for diesels only.

Is there any reason I couldn't use this on my 1.8t? The engine's the same size, as far as I know, and if it will fit then I think I'd rather have the extra gunk protection and airflow enhancement.

Good find. I didn't know about this. It looks like the front of it just mounts to the rear of the belly pan. I am not sure where the rear of the pan mounts but there are two holes for mounting. It is labeled as a sound deadener, so that is probably why they only put it on the diesel. The diesel also uses a different front belly pan with insulating material on in it.

There are four different part numbers listed for the pan. One for the 4 cyl manual diesel. One for the 4 cyl auto diesel. One for the 6 cyl manual diesel. One for the 6 cyl auto diesel. The part number is 8D0863822 for the 4 cyl manual. At world impex the pan runs for $250.

$250...damn. Maybe I can get my dealer to test-fit one on my car just so I can see if it will work.

Based on the way the thing connects, I can say with a high degree of confidence that it doesn't get in the way of removing the front bellypan when it's time to change the oil.

What is part #9, just out of curiosity?

The 1.8t cat is right after the turbo. It should not be close to this pan at all. In fact the TDI downpipe is very similar to the 1.8t downpipe. The shape is the same, except the TDI has the flexjoint right after the turbo, and the cat is after that. The TDI cat is much smaller than the 1.8t cat though.

In the UK, this part of the belly pan was only fitted to the earlier b5 mechanical diesel, the later 5.5 PD is not meant to have one apparently, although the one from my old b5 fits perfectly. The front part of it is sandwiched in between that metal strip and the front pan, sharing the 3 mountings, and with 2 more further back, it covers most of the gearbox.

What's interesting is that the price varies so much between the pans. I don't know what the difference in the pans is but here is the breakdown:

4B0863822G - 4 cyl auto - $166.68
4B0863822F - 6 cyl manual - $109.17
4B0863822H - 6 cyl auto - $109.17

I wonder if the variance in price is something similar to the 1.8t and v6 vs the W8 belly pan.

I have no idea. The auto transmission is larger than the manual, so it could be that the auto diesel pan has to dip lower than the manual pan does. It could also simply be an issue of decreased price vs. increased demand.

To answer your PM, no I haven't installed the bellypan extension. I would, if I had $500 to spare and nothing else on the car that needed fixing, but right now I've got a dead speaker and a burned-out vent light and a cruise control stalk that hasn't worked in years -- they come first.

I was under the impression that the Thor pan was compatible with a tranny pan that they made...

Mine has the extension, but then it should, as mine is the diesel version.
It is a pain as the rear extension has to come off before the forward one can be dropped. Not much sound suppression provided.
In summation: it's costly, cumbersome, and ineffective. Spend your money on something you won't regret.

Sounds to me like yours is installed incorrectly. The diagrams clearly show the rear pan going on first, and coming off last.

Aside from sounds dampening, is the underside any cleaner for it?
