Pardon my ignorance, as a new owner of '04 Passat GLS 1.8T, I just had to ask - what is a Passat Variant? The search feature didn't help much and Google offered lots of reading material in German

I always thought that variant was anything that was derived from the the original model of that car. So, in teh case of the Golf Mk4, that would be teh Bora/Jetta.
It does not necessarly mean estate/station wagen etc....

In fact the MK1 Passat was a hatch back variant of the saloon Santana ( from memory)

I think you're right, TGR. However, he did ask what a Passat variant was, so in this case, it does mean station wagon, etc.
