I have a 2005 passat-wagon and I do own a laptop.

I think I'd rather by a cable that hooks into the car and then runs on software on my laptop rather than a dedicated device.

What do y'all recommend?

Most people will go here: Ross-Tech: VCDS

I've had one for years and it's the most capable tool you can get for VAG products.

What are you trying to do with it?
If you want to read/clear trouble codes and see the values of your sensors, you can try my setup.

I purchased one of these for less than $10
Super Mini OBD2 OBDII ELM327 V2 1 Android Bluetooth Adapter Auto Scanner Torque | eBay

Then I purchased this app for my phone for $5

You can use it real time while driving and it has digital gauges. I have AFR, Boost, Coolant temp, and a few more displaying on my phone placed on the dash.
