Warning: to all that have the P&P Strut Bar

For the past few weeks, I have been experiencing a slight Dashboard creek. I would have been concerned, except for the fact that one-week before I was talking to VWGUY4EVER about our B5's and he mentioned that he had a dashboard creek, and it went away after a while. At the time I had no such prolbem with my B5. So a few days later when it happened to me, I thought hey this is "normal" and it'll go away soon. Totally my fault for not looking into it sooner.

In the past week things have gotten much worse, a more consistent. My sister drove my B5 the other day and wondered if that bar I put in was the problem.

So I loosened both bolts and using a torque wrench set to 50 ft-lbs I began to retorqued the bolts. A second later it gave way. Yes I stripped the thread, not on the bolts, but on the Nut or whatever it is that is tied to my front suspension. I took out my P&P Strut bar, and placed the bolts back in. Without the Strut Bar, I was able to catch 4 or 5 threads.

I would not recommend using the P&P strut Bar WITHOUT replacing the factory bolts with a bolt that is at least 1/4"-1/2" longer, so it can catch more threads.

As for my car, I may not ever place the strut bar back again, as I am now missing those threads permanently, and when you have a strut bar, it blocks the Battery, and other components. I would be scared each time I would need to move the bar for simple maintenance procedures.

Here are P&P's instructions on mounting the bar:

interesting...

one of the first things people should do when they encounter noise with their dash, either creaking or rattling, is to remove the end trim pieces and make sure that each side of the dash has the little rubber dampener properly between the metal brace and the dashboard "foot". pop them open and you'll see, i actually just got finished with this on my car. the driver said was half off and the passenger side was totally off. i'm hoping it quiets things up, along with a bunch of tightening i did.

I got the bar during this GB:

I also now remember by reading the post that they didn't send two washers that the instuctions said they would....

mm... did you remove the washer??? from my experience... you need to remove the washer under the screw... if you'd like to keep a washer then you need to move to a thinner one... you'll notice that the stock washer is like 3mm to 5mm wide... if your reusing the washer.. and adding the strut bar... then your adding another 3mm or more to that screw.. so to counter act i just used the strut with no washer....

this might help....

As noted in the other thread I linked to above, they didn't send me a washer, so I used the OEM washer and the strut bar, no second washer.

ttt again
Re: Warning: to all that have the P&P Strut Bar (Furiator)

mine catches enough thread. but as james says, don't use the oem washer.

and why would you need to keep removing the bar anyway? other than changing your battery or suspension, i don't see any other need to take the bar off.

The bolts are non-reusable.....must be replaced when removed. Refer to Bentley, section S 40.
Re: Warning: to all that have the P&P Strut Bar (VW'R'US)

I had this bar, dash made mad sounds, couldn't locate source, bar our, dash quiet.
Re: Warning: to all that have the P&P Strut Bar (AndyA6)

I'll take a look at the CD, as soon as I fix my cd drive on my laptop where the CD is installed...

If thos bolts are truly non-replacable, I don't think I want the bar there. You would need a new set of bolts everytime you had to change the battery?

I got to think about this some more before I place the strut bar back on.
