until VW changes something I'd be surprised if they don't continue to plummet

A whopping 53 total sales of Eurovan  :weirdo:. Such high volume is a good candidate for the chopping block in other successful & profitable automobile manufacturers.

Exchange rate woes, product problems or just greedy pricing?
None of the above, unless you consider an ancient product lineup a product problem. Gosh, the Passat was out in late 97, the Beetle 98, Jetta/Golf in 99 ... sure the Touareg and Phaeton are new, but they are not core products for VW, IMO.
VW should have intro'd a samll Golf-based SUV. THAT would have boosted sales.

What's your point?
You would like it if everyone drove a friggin Toyota Camry?
Or VW should make an oversized and unsafe Touareg-Suburban in order to increase sales in the US?
Are you trying to say VW is going to go out of business next year?

On the other side of the coin, those crazy people over at Consumer Reports just named the VW Passat best family sedan. If they would have had a wagon category, the Passat would have won that, too.

So did Edmund, and IIRC years ago C&D named the Renault car of the year  , and see where that wonder car ended up.

Magazine endorsement is nice, but doesn't always translate to sales. Word of mouth is king, and that's what VW is lacking even among us VW owners.

Sure. Given that U.S. Camry sales in Feb. 2004 (30,350; up 7.1% from Feb. 2003) were nearly twice the figure for all VWoA vehicles, this might just be the case.

I'm probably going to buy/lease a Passatt GLX 4motion - the probably bit is just the final price - which for sure is not helped by exchange rate.

Can't wait for the new model and .... like to avoid being first on major updates.

Yes, but only for the 6-cylinder. The reliability of the 1.8T has dropped to around 30% below dead center average, which is unacceptable IMHO. The V6 was only about 10% below average....and fell witin the +/-10% that CR considers "Average"...but just barely...
