I can't seem to get my car to connect to any vagcom or any of that stuff I tried switching out the ecm once and plugging it in and it connected just fine but the immobilizer turns on obviously so I am assuming that means I need a new ecm does anyone know if
that video is legit and should work or is it a waste of time?

More like we just don't know the answer. Common issues for not connecting are aftermarket stereos or a bad ABS module. Try disconnecting them and see if VCDS will connect.

Try disconnecting the ABS module's cable harness and see if you can now communicate with the other modules. (Been there ... done that, couldn't pass smog until I replaced my ABS module. I know now I could have passed smog simply by leaving the ABS disconnected, which would be fine for CA inspection, maybe not in other states, where the inspection transcends emissions.

If you still can't talk to your ECM with your ABS disconnected, then the ECM itself is a possibility.

I have also had trouble talking to my ECM if I don't follow a specific protocol:
1) PC on, fully booted
2) VCDS cable plugged in first to PC, then to OBDII port under dash
3) ignition on
4) start VCS software

If I deviate from this sequence, I can get "failure to communicate" errors.

Are there any other systems in the car that don't work?. A lot of times, when there is another system in the car like something seemingly trivial that fails, it ties into the same circuit and causes other things to seemingly fail. Canbus can be a real pain sometimes.
