i just got my vagcom yesterday and only had a few minutes to hook it up last night. i did a quick code scan, and am a bit worried by all the codes i got back.

i just bought the car last week - an 02 w8 wagon with 43k miles. i checked its service record (which looked pretty clean) and had my mechanic look at it before purchase and all checked out ok. everything in the car appears to be working properly (except where noted below) and there are no warning lights on the dash. but it seems like i've got codes coming from everywhere.

i try to do as much of my own work on my vehicles as possible, but i have no experience with vw's, and not much experience with automotive electronics. i'm going to record these codes and clear them to see if they re-appear. i saw that there were more screens in vagcom, but i haven't had a chance to check it all out yet (i'll have to wait until tonight to play with it some more). will i be able to get more detail on these problems by digging deeper with vagcon?

what else should i be doing to diagnose these problems? please have a look at my codes [[[and comments]]] below and let me know what you think.

thank you...

16840 - EVAP System: Very Small Leak Detected
P0456 - 35-00 - -

[[[i got a check engine light right after bringing the car home - i read and cleared a p0456 'Evap emission control system leak very small' with an odb2 scanner. i think it was just the gas cap, since it hasn't reappeared in about 800 miles since.]]]

17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer
P1570 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

[[[no idea what this is, but i can tell you that maybe 5 times we have tried to start the engine and had it not start on the first try. i thought we were just not engaging the starter long enough (we're still getting used to starting an engine that we can barely hear) and in these cases it stated right up on the second try. could the immobilizer be failing and preventing the car from starting on the first try?]]]

[[[i was expecting codes here because i can hear the flap servos for the ac system clicking in the dash - they are barely audible, but are going almost constantly. but i'm surprised to see that its reporting all three servos have failed, as well as a problem with the control module - it seems unlikely that all three motors would fail together. could this be a controller problem instead?]]]
