I am new to this but I would like to diagnose my own problems with my VW. Is the only difference between the VAG and OBDII the software. If that is the case, then can you buy a cable to connect your Laptop to your car and get the shareware version of VAGCOM. I see people with directions on how to build the interface. Can you only buy the cable from the VAGCOM dealer or can you use the OBDII cable with the VAGCOM software? So far it seems like build one or buy one for $220.

I just got an OBDII scanner (Auto X-Ray) with the interfaces for the two types of OBDII and the big three's OBDI since I've got six cars (89 accord, 94 dodge ram, 97 ford escort, 97 olds eighty eight, 01 olds silhouette, 99 passat)... The scanner has a configuration for VW OBDII and it synced last night. A friend of mine from a local group has a VAG and highly recommends that since the OBDII only reads and corrects engine codes (I didn't have any). I had to compromise since I have a manual tranny and need the ability to scan the rest of my cars; but if you have the money get the VAG. Even if you don't use it, you will instantly become the most popular guy among VW owners in your area :lol:

it includes the cable and the shareware version. it'll let you check and clear codes, as well as change the coding (like the tip "sport" mode)

i just got the br-3 88bucks

works great for getting data and codes and clearning the CEL

it however doesnt have such great software ( its old) but it does what you need it to do


it cant "write" information the the cars computer so if you need to clear air bag lights or switch your auto trans to sports instead of econ or adjust you light leveling this isnt for you
