I recently purchased a 2003 wagon. It had a CD/cassette/radio head unit--nothing said Monsoon on it. I just installed a Sony double DIN HU and like it so I started thinking about adding new speakers and maybe a powered sub. The challenge is that Crutchfield says that I should not have tweeters in the doors, but I do. I checked the rear drivers side panel and there was no evidence of an amp or CD changer.

What did I have in this car, and what can I install? The stock woofers sound crappy. I would like to order everything at once and have it be right the first time.

Also, to anyone that has installed a powered subwoofer in a wagon--where did you put it? There does not seem to be room under the front seats and I would like to retain the fold flat option of the rear seats.

Thanks!

I have found that the guy at Crutchfield was apparently wrong. It seems that all Passats came with the tweeters in the doors, not just the Monsoons. I have ordered a new component set so hopefully the install goes well.

For a sub, I would recommend (obviously) something small-ish, and powered. Plug-in power connections (as opposed to screw terminals), should you need to take it out for space.

A good ol' Bazooka tube can be fairly easily secured to the floor (or a side panel) with a lashing strap (this is how my ancient Kenwood tube is secured to the floor), and makes removal tool-free.
I've also seen a mini powered sub from JBL, that the sub enclosure can be popped off of the amp (which you bolt down), tool-free (for cargo space.)

Just out of curiosity, what speaker set did you get? From experience, the tweeters in an Alpine SPS-610C set (what I put in my wagon) can be adapted into the factory mounts (read: no visible modification!), and the woofers are bolt-in (with the proper brackets, of course.)
Other makes/models, I can't vouch for.
