So, I have a 99 1.8t. It has the GIAC chip. 124000 miles. Any info on when the turbo will go? Should I just get it replaced and chalk it up to preventive maintenance? The car has been fantastic, just don't want any catastrophic failures. Also any good independent shops in Vancouver area?

I'm a big fan of preventative maintenance, particularly when failure has significant consequences as the failure of the timing belt. If your turbo fails, you will be driving a 90 HP car until you get it fixed. There is little way to know the condition of the turbocharger. If you use a good oil and don't shutdown soon after a hard run, your turbo is probably in good condition.
