TRW/Lucas makes some quality stuff . . . . they're all the same IMO. All of them will wear down and eventually need replacement. Not much science to a ball joint & some grease. All rubber bushings will dry out and crack with age.

the sidem arms were not the same... many (including myself) reported them failing after only 10k-15k. Thus my concern...crew217 said:TRW/Lucas makes some quality stuff . . . . they're all the same IMO. All of them will wear down and eventually need replacement. Well that's because they were the old CA design which ECS wonderfully sold to a bunch of people. Go ECS! :thumbdownupshot said:the sidem arms were not the same... many (including myself) reported them failing after only 10k-15k. Thus my concern...
BEWARE . . . those are not "real" euro control arms. Audicentral has been running a scam on those . . . . they're actually chinese CAs which are made off an older design. (kinda sounds like Sidems . . . )upshot said:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...d=1,1&item=7971199088&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT
not bad.. I'm still thinking though...
How do you know that they were the larger ball? Meyle is the only company which sells a HD version with an all metal larger ball on them. There was a small change between the 98s & 2000's in the TRE design, so to me, it seems like you got a replica of what comes on the cars right now.Salaryman said:I bought outer tie rod ends from this company. Their eBay ad and Web site (newyorkparts.com) state:
"All steel Updated AND Upgraded tie rod ends. Brand NEW BY TRW/BAW!!"
I assumed that meant they were TRW parts (and that BAW was a TRW partner). They even seemed to be using the same images I found on the ECS web site describing the same parts - I implied with TRWs permission.

So, cheap price, "TRW", and fast shipping. I bit and was sent BAW brand parts which, after some research, I discovered were Chinese and not related to TRW. They were the "updated" design - all steel, thicker shaft larger ball...but who knows what the quality is or what wear I'll get out of them. They "looked" fine and I've put 3K on them w/o problem - we'll see how they hold up.
Just my story,
Loren
Ah, you have regular OEM sized ones then if you were replacing the steel units with alum ones.Salaryman said:Maybe - I'm not familiar with the tie rod ends on current Passats. I did an eyeball comparison of what I took off (all-steel OEM part that replaced the original aluminum part) side by side with the BAW/Chinese replacement part. The EXTERIOR diameter of the casting was larger. No tearddown, so no definitive measurement of the ball. Could be a puny ball in a thick housing. on another note, maybe people with extremely large heads just have thicker skulls.:biglaugh: They don't appear to be any smarter...
Doubt it. The TRE's yes . . . .swcrow17 said:Hey Crew....is there a noticeable difference between a Mayle CA and the OEM CA (not hijacking the thread FYI)? Still messing with my suspension prob and this thread looks right up my alley.
Like what? BTW, I'm amazed how fast you reply...I wasn't expecting a reply till this evening.:thumbup:crew217 said:The TRE's yes . . . .
