My trunk lid does release when I press the button but the lid stays in place: does not lift, does not pop open.

It was like this since I got it in May, not sure how it supposed to work.

When I lift it by hand I feel resistance, tried WD40 in places I could spot rust but that did not help much.

Should it pop up open on its own?

Is it the struts' fault? How to test them?

Or, there may be nothing at all wrong. While some cars have the trunk lid swing several inches or even completely open, the Passat does not. Neither of mine popped more than a half inch, tops. And yes, there is some resistance opening the lid.

+1 regarding our 2000 Passat. Trunk unlatches just fine when hitting the release switch, but the lid stays where it is until u lift it up.
