It's either the type of fluid, or they didn't get it nearly to 'full'. Hopefully the later.

There's only on "for sure" (Pentosin ATF) and a 90% for sure second (Redling D4 ATF) that will work.

We have a couple of people who have put some miles on the D4... I'll be joining them in about 8k.

Yeah, I bet they used regular tranny fluid. Do you think its real bad to drive around for a few days like that? I cant get the car into VW till fri.

5 speed is no big deal.

It's not good to be stressing the valve body out like that. I am betting on low fluid. It is not so easy to do the Tip fluid change without the whole background on the job. Actual work is not too bad.

I am willing to bet that they filled it with regular ATF. VW ATF is synthetic and pricey @ $15 a quart. I would get that stuff out of there immediately and put the VW stuff in. Also I am curious about how many miles are on the tranny?

As far as the 5 speed, it is a piece of cake as some others here have mentioned. Any good tranny fluid should do.
