I have a 2009 Passat that has been giving me problems for a while now.

Problem is that car will run Ok for a mile or two, then the engine will hesitate, once in the freeway the car will run ok above 2000 RPM, but between 1600-1800 RPM the car will shake really bad, once it does this I'll step on the accelerator slowly, car will not respond immediately but gradually will accelerate.

I took the car to the dealership a couple of months ago for a general check, they told me that the dividers in the intake were missing, I bought an original intake manifold and replace it myself. The problem didn't go away.

Today I ran a scan and got the following codes:

P0300 Random misfire detected.
P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire.
P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire.
P2008 Intake manifold runner control circuit/open bank 1
P0506 Idle air control system RPM lower than expected

The question is where should I start?

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

I feel your pain. I just bought a used 2008 Passat....with a few issues....but I'm working through them.

The P300 related stuff could be bad or marginal coil packs. Believe it or not, they are easy to pull out. 10 min max to pull the air cleaner cover and coils....

I had a P0304....in my case it was corrosion on the coil pack. I pulled it out...cleaned off the rust with a 3M scratch pad....running fine for 2 days. I also replaced the plugs since they looked like they were original and the PO might have been running cheap gas.

Fix your misfires first before you worry about the others.

how many miles? I assume Tfo SI engine, I do not like throwing money at things unless I know for certainty what the cause is,however with the history (I remember post re. dividers) and car's age ,regardless, buy a new set of coils (middle of road price) ,and a set of NGK pfr6q plugs...... these engines as well as those in the B5 platfornm especially the 1.8s have had coil pack recalls........ as mentioned start there,their failure will cause a myriad of problems ,meanwhile check for vacuum leaks, cracked/broken dipstick tube and the usual suspects...

How can I check the electric side of the coil? parameters and such.

as mentioned start there,their failure will cause a myriad of problems ,meanwhile check for vacuum leaks, cracked/broken dipstick tube and the usual suspects...
No evident vacuum leaks, regarding the "broken dipstick", whats that about?

Fuel injectors need to be ruled out, move fuel injector 4 to 3 and two to one and vice versa, if the misfire moves with fuel injectors there you have it.

unless you set up a "trigger" to activate coil with a harness connection ,no way easily that I am aware of to check, the coils tend to go bad this Imdo know and similar design on the 1.8s had VW recall, heat and cooling (133k) takes its toll, and I have noticed that "twisting" them to remove can screw them up if old.... jmo

I took out the fuel injectors, attached is a picture. I cleaned the injectors but the right thing to do will be to buy them new, right?

I did another scan today; the difference was that I swap the coils; besides all the codes that I already have a new one came up: P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire.

First thing I'm doing is changing the injectors.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, Thanks!!

UPDATE:

I found out that the connector to the solenoid under the arm that moves the intake runner flaps was not connected :icon_eek: I plugged the connector and did another test drive.

The car ran much better, however, I have now another code: P2015 and after some visual test I notice that the arm that activates the runners will move if I rev the engine up to 4000 rpm but DOES NOT MOVE BACK to the starting position.

This can't be normal, right?

Also, I removed the vacuum line that is connected to the solenoid and the vacuum is weak and the engine did not hesitated at all; I can't find the vacuum leak though, any tips as to how to check the hard to find vacuum leaks?
