2002 passat glx v6

A slight but noticeable howl between 50 and 60 mph, accentuated during acceleration.

Checked diff fluid, was low. Added about 0.4 qts.

Still noisy.

Any ideas on how to quiet it down? (additives, thicker oil, etc)

Used mobil delvac synth 75w90

where is the sound?
it could be wheel bearings or a tire wearing uneven or a few other things.
got some more info?

The sound comes from the passenger side. Was there before my last tire change ruling out the tires. It is definitely a diff hum/howl and it comes up at acceleration only between 50 and 60 mph.

What puzzles me is that it's not a grinding sound and it's not related to whether driving straight or turning, as I would think a wheel bearing going bad would be (while turning).

Those of you who had your bearings go bad, what were your symptoms?

you are defining what a bad axle does, not a wheel bearing(it is in the hub)
my friends passat had a bad one and it hummed.

It's great to have these forums, your input is very appreciated. Will definitely start looking at the left wheel bearing on my next corrective maint. batch...cheaper than rebuilding a differential, that's for sure.
