I bought all the parts for the timing belt change for my 99 1.8T from a member of this board. I brought them to my VW specialist to do the job and they just called me and said that the parts are not correct for my passat and they're for the Audi 1.8T... WTF?? are they not the exact same??

Please tell me my VW guys are wrong...

I now hear that the 99 1.8T changed midway through the year....something around engine # 300,000 could this be the reason they aren't correct?

I think that there is different parts for engine codes. If the parts are for a and AEB audi then they should fit your AEB vw.

That is correct. The parts are for the engine code itself, e.g. AEB, ATW, etc...

For a technical breakdown of the parts and numbers, you can check with www.ecstuning.com as they have full kits for them.

ecs sells the same kit for both of the AEB and ATW codes.

I'm still not understanding what the differences that my VW guys could be talking about???

If the tensioner you have is the old style, it will be correct for the new one to look different and I even think the belt has a different number of teeth. I would search here (start in the info section for the How To first) to see if you can find the correct length and the pictures then see if what you got matches the updated version. Has this mech seen the older B5's?
