The 1.8T and the V6 use a timing belt to drive the exhaust cam(s) from the crank. They use (a) small timing chain(s) to drive the exahust cam(s) from the intake cam(s).

If they are simply replacing the timing BELT, the timing CHAIN(S) should not be a factor. If they are changing the timing chains (more often, the cam seals or the cam chain adjuster/tensioners), then the timing belt is involved.

do the timing chains ever need to be replaced?

my B5 has 83000 miles and i dont know the complete history since i bought it at 79000 miles.. i just thought id do the timing belt but i dont know about the timing chain. IMO its a chain and should be good for the life of the car.
