Thinking of buying a Golf GTI - 1.8T or VR6?

I'm going to sell my bike and buy a second car because of my growing family. Iv'e pretty much narrowed my choices down to a used 99-01 Golf GTI but I don't know whether to get one with a VR6 or 1.8T engine. I don't have any experience with either since my Passat is a V6 (4Motion) so I'm looking for opinions/info (reliability, performance, mpg, etc) on them.

It will be my daily driver and I don't expect to mod very much...maybe suspension, wheels and something to increase HP a little depending on the engine.

1.8T has better potential given its a forced induction. On the other hand, VR6 has better refinement. 01 1.8T has the infamous ignition coil pack issue.
I have had a string of GTIs since the first one. When they first offered the VR6 motor I lusted after it. I finally got one, a 95 GTI. Frankly, after living with it for several years, I would have rather stayed with the 2.0. So my vote would be for the 1.8T. Its a great motor.

Regards, Ray
Thanks for the replies so far guys! I was leaning slightly towards the 1.8T to begin with but I really don't know anything about the VR6. Also, is the 1.8T in the Golf exactly the same as in the Passat or are they tuned differently?

They are similar but positioned differentely....which also gives it an adventage in the intake and the exhaust department. GTIs also weight a little less.

With K03 Sport and a chip you will get better performance out of it then Passat with a K04.....

I would take the 1.8t, but not for the reasons mentioned above. The VR6 is pretty heavy. The weight savings from going 4 instead of 6 lead to a bit better front back balance.
I had a 95 Jetta with the VR6, wonderful car. My suggestion would be to drive them both, see which you like better. The VR6 though is a sweet motor, and my personal tastes are starting to lean away from turbo motors (lag is frustrating!).
VR6's are gas hogs.

Get the 1.8t.

Though, there is something special about a VR engine that I still love...

Famous last words. :D

Get the 1.8T if you're concerned about gas.

Would it be that they are bulletproof and have a sexy exhaust note? (now where is the drooling smiley?)
