Ok so i noticed lately there has been a lot of threads regarding chips and/or ECU upgrades. I decided to create this thread with all the information you may need about them. Im pretty sure there was another one around but here it is, Hope this helps.

Engine: 1.8T

The 1.8t at stock stage produces 7-9llbs of boost depending on the year. Your chip or ECU basically controls everything going on in your engine as far as boost, emissions, timing, knock, detonation, AFR, etc.

When beginning to modify the performance of your 1.8T the very item to consider has got to be a reprogrammed ECU, or as everyone calls them "chips". A chip for a 1.8T will provide amazing gains for a small amount of money, it is definitely the most cost-effective mod you can do! The decision of what chip to purchase is probably one of the hardest decisions for a 1.8T owner to make some offer a 1.0 bar stage, some .08 bar, etc. With so many choices out there and all tuners making the same claims it can get quite confusing at times. They are basically all the same some are more aggressive but here are the links to the product page and some info on the brand:

Depending on your engine code the performace increase does vary. Also these are "crank" power NOT at the wheels

RELIABILITY:

For some the question of reliability is of great concern when purchasing a chip. Increasing the boost on your 1.8T will undoubtably result in more wear and tear on your engine and especially your transmission. Your driving style will have a lot to do with reliability however. If you race from light to light racing every car in sight your transmission will suffer and you will be lucky to get 30k out of your clutch! However, driving with a more spirited attitude at times shouldn't really affect the overall reliability of your engine and transmission. Its been proven that thousands of people have ran their chipped 1.8T's with no problems at all. It must be said that anytime you modify your car your taking the stock components to the limits of their capabilities and they may require replacing sooner that what would be normal.

PRICE:

Although the price of a chip may be a little high for some to entertain, when you consider the $/hp value you would be silly not to consider a chip. For example the average gain from a chip is about 45hp and the average cost of a chip is about $450; this works out to $10 per hp. Just imagine if every mod had this much potential, you could sink $1000 dollars into your engine and come out with 100 extra hp!! DREAM ON!! Compare that value to lets say perhaps a turbo inlet pipe; avg price $170, avg gains 4hp, result = $42 per hp. Don't waste your time with lower priced mods first that wont give you much gain for the price.
Prices for a chip will range from $299-$899. The lower priced chip is definitely a good buy but if your looking for some different features and higher gains look to spend at least $500.

ADVICE

After you get your car chipped you should look into buying a Diverter Valve, Boost Gauge and replace your old crusty vaccum lines.

Diverter Valve

some Diverter Valve options:

forge 007
Apr r1
dahlback
bailey
purems
710
710n

Boost Gauge

I can not emphasize how much you need a boost gauge chipped or not. there are many many options on this I personally always liked autometer and thats what i have but the choices are endless. You ll also need a pod for your new gauge.

Boost Gauge options :

autometer
Vdo
Apexi
Defi
Mallory
Glowshift
etc

Pod options:

autometer
new south performance

ETC

Vaccum Lines

Vaccum lines get crusty and brake over the years i suggest changing them to avoid vaccum/boost leaks and stop your car performing the way it should.

Chip: APR
Engine: AEB
Tranny: Manual
Other Mods: EVOMS DV
Price: $350 for APR equipped ECU 558M, used
Summary: I chose this setup for the price and overall satisfaction with APR customer service and reputation. This chip provides a significant increase in power. While I was never dynoed for exact numbers, be sure you will see your money was well spent. Can be driven stock like. No rushes of power with conservative driving. Expect improved gas mileage. When you want to lay the hammer down though, be ready for a smile. I peak around 16PSI. Quite the difference between a stock peak of 7PSI. Downside is, if you plan to upgrade to K04 you will need a different software provider as APR does not -and shows no interest in - K04 software for our Passats. On highways it works wonders. While the turbo itself is limited near 15PSI or so, the power available at higher speeds is noticeable as well. Once you set cruise control expect your MPG to improve climb to those +3MPG people claim. I am more of a for show guy and with my 65lb wheels/tires on each corner : off the line I think the chip simply compensates for the wheels. Still, in second gear I have had them chirp.

Chip: UPsolute
Engine: AEB
Tranny: Tiptronic
Other Mods: K04 turbo, Forge DV, high flow cat converter, 5bar fpr, Jetex exhaust
Price: $375 for K03 program including install and vag com data logging - $150 for K04 upgrade.
Summary: Very easy to get chipped - used the local rep Scott Ramsey for both the K03 original software and the K04 upgrade. You have to go see Scott but the main advantage to this method vs. sending your ECU out is that you get to keep your car and you get to do the test drive with Scott while he has a vag com hooked up and is reviewing your data. Power delivery is really smooth and delivery is steady throughout the power band. It doesn't kick in and throw you back against your seats early on but is really set up well if you do lots of highway driving and want great passing power at all speeds. The K04 upgrade program is similar in the delivery but with the extra boost from the bigger turbo along with the additional fuel from my 5bar fpr, the combo does have that push you back into your seat feel but it keeps it up all the way through the gears and keeps pulling well past 80mph.

Chip: Revo 1.4 Bar ($499) with SPS1 controller ($149)
Engine: 1.8T 20V AWM
Tranny: Tiptronic
Engine Mods:Forge DV, N75J, K&N Drop-in, Remus Muffler

I got this chip as a beta version for try-out user like 2 years ago. It is a quite aggressive chip as for daily driver. I used to kick the car pretty hard with this chip before the high gas price. The boost sometimes spikes over 20 psi in the mid-rpm range. I only recommend this chip to any B5.5 user if you have extra budget in hand. If not, I will suggest you to take something else instead of Revo. I think Revo is a little bit over price compare to other choices. Anyway, I hope this little information would help to fill up here. Enjoy your chip guys~ Alex

V6 Engine:

There arent as many chip vendors for the 2.8 v6 and neither are much gains.
For real gains on the v6 i would suggest a PES supercharger.

here are some chip options for the v6:

GIAC: http://www.giacusa.com/
GAIN: 10-12hp

Neuspeed: http://www.neuspeed.com/
GAIN: 10-12hp

PES: http://www.chip2perform.com/

TRANSMISSION CHIPS (TIPTRONIC)

Giac offers a tiptronic chip. This is NOT a ECU chip they go on the TCM (Transmission control module).
They basically increase shifting performance in both auto and tiptronic modes.

I still want to know one thing... some 1.8t owners have reported better gas mileage after chipping; can any V6 owner report the same? has ANYONE seen better mileage on a V6 with a chip?

You should mention that Neuspeed also has a 1 bar chip (14.7 PSI).
