Obviously the immediate importance is that everyone is ok.
To bad about the car though, especially since you've had the car since brand new. Simular situation as me, I had 98 Mercury Mystique that I purchased brand new and then dumped 2x more than the original price into 'upgrades'. That too was longest lasting car I had (at that point in time) until it got totaled in spring of 2012. The car was spotless before the accident. It was a sad day when it left the scene of the accident on a flat bed totally crumpled.
At that point in time the only car I was interest in was an '07 - '08 Audi S4, but at that time it was out of reach. Seeing as I already had my 98 Passat, not running with a grenaded engine, I did an engine swap and never looked back. My 98 has been my DD coming up on 6 years now. Besides the minor stuff I got going on with it now, it has never left me stranded. The thought of being married to a ridiculous monthly car payment keeps me in check. My 98 Passat does me just fine.
As for you, good luck on your next choice. Maybe we'll see you in the B7 B8 forums?
