OK - so last weekend I went to replace the Bank 1 Sensor 2 O2 sensor.

Because of the cable ties, I ended up having to remove both sensors, and it turned out that the brown connector was connected to the O2 sensor on the passenger side, and the green connector was installed on the drivers side sensor.

Am I crazy, or is this reverse - I thought bank 1 was passenger and bank 2 was drivers.

Additionally, after installing the new replacement O2 sensor (Green connector - bank 1 sensor 2) on the drivers side (where it came from) I am now throwing P1176 and P1177. Is it possible that these sensors are installed in the wrong locations and is what is generating these codes?

OK - just an update. Maybe this will help someone someday, although I think this type of error is rare. It looks like the sensors were swapped. Once I swapped them and cleared the code, it has stayed off for over a month now. Here is what I think happened under the previous owner:

Bank 1 sensor failed. He thought he could replace it himself and disconnected it at the connector and unscrewed the sensor - but couldn't pull it out since it is tie wrapped to the transmission. He then unscrewed the second sensor without marking it, assuming that he could pull both of them up. When that didn't work, he cut the Bank 1 cable about 2 feet away from the connector and tried to pull it out the bottom. When that didn't work, he screwed the sensors back in the wrong sockets and then plugged both the connectors back in and shoved the cut end of the Bank one sensor down into the engine bay. :thumbdown

Alternatively, it was taken to a repair shop that was a den of theives that screwed things up to create more work for themselves.

In any case, it looks like P1176 and P1177 can happen due to reversed post-cat O2 sensors ... the more you know... :)
