Super Charged V6

I was wondering if anyone has acually purchased and installed a Super Charger. I've searched and searched and can not find anyone that has done so. I know it will give you great gains. But I would love to know if it is really worth it. I've noticed from a lot of people posting that a V6 isn't worth really moding the motor that much unless you put a supercharger in it. I would love to know the meaning behing this. Because I have owned V6's before (not a passat) and I installed an intake and a chip and it gave me a pretty good boost in performance. So i don't see why if i add these again i will not see a good inprovement in engine performance? I just can't see spending 5 grand on a supercharger, There must be other things you could do to greatly improve the engine performance. Can anyone out there HELP ME!!!

But why it that the only good mod for V6's
because all v6 people here have gone that route and can tell you that a chip wont put out the extra 10hp, it'll remove the rev limiter instead. and the only difference a CAI will make is audio, not performance. a g2 can be had for around 3g to 3500. check ebay as PES have been selling them there. install is around 800ish. get your timing belt/water pump done at the same time depending on your milage...etc.

it's not the only good mod for the v6. you have other choices like...2.7t swap. bi-turbo addition. but these options make the g2 seem like chump change.

we all had the same question. but for those of us who got the g2 after getting chipped and cai/exhaust, we can easily tell you that it's the only worthwhile hp gain mod for your v6 and you wont regret getting it.
Heres a complete kit (I think its complete) for 600, however you need to rebuild the supercharger for 800-1000. Not a bad deal.

it's the only mod that will get some decent power gains for the v6. chip gets less 10hp, exhaust probably less than 10hp also.

compare to a chip for the 1.8t, which will get ~50hp.

make sure all other components are included, and the chip is compatible with your computer.
Having modded a 2003 GLX 4Motion myself I can tell you this:
Depending on what you do (and expect) you can see gains, but the dollar to gain ratio is lower.
A chip "bumps" the rev limiter up - it does NOT remove it! GIAC removes the TOP SPEED limiter.
Chip is about 300.00, EvoMS intake was 270.00, UnorthodoxRacing UDP set was about 400.00 (about 300.00 to get installed), Remus rear mufflers were 275.00 each (about 120.00 to get installed).
So, that's almost 1/2 of the G2 kit, and nowhere near half the gain.
At least the other way you can put parts on a little at a time.
I was satisfied with the results, but knew it wasn't going to push 290 bhp.
I ended up trading it in on a 2003 W8, which stock pulls 270bhp/ 274tq.
That's "the best upgrade" for a Passat, in my humble opinion.
don't forget, the g2 can be found new on ebay for ~$3500 from time to time.
What are the best kind of Brakes to buy and Rotors.
Good luck actually getting a G2 when you want one.
If you think you can plunk down the dinero, and get it delivered to your door step in 3 days, you be trippin'.
that's not counting possible hassle with the chip.

This is the reason why people say a supercharger is the only good mod for the VR6. The reason why a supercharger is the only good mod for the VR6 is:

The VR6 is already 90% as good as any naturally-aspirated engine can be. (if I recall correctly, it even has a sexy variable-length intake so it can use pressure harmonics to its advantage.) By comparison to the 1.8t, though, it seems to fall short for its size. Why? There are two reasons for this: one, the 1.8t has a compressor that can be adjusted with the simple turn of a screw, whereas the VR6 is left to wheeze along like every other "normal" engine; and two, the 1.8t is power-limited when it leaves the factory -- an ECU upgrade wouldn't make nearly so much difference for the 1.8t (and thus create the same expectation for the VR6) if the 1.8t operated somewhere near its actual limits when you bought it.

Because the 1.8t's potential can be unleashed with such low cost of time, money, and effort, people expect the same of the VR6. That is an unreasonable expectation because the VR6 simply doesn't have the same equipment as the 1.8t. When you add a supercharger, you give it the ability to compress its intake air just like the 1.8t can, and so it starts to perform much more like people expect it to.

What you said was perfectly valid, ycharlies, but it didn't address why the VR6 is barely tuneable, only why people say it's barely tuneable.

i think you mean v6. but it's ok. turbo vs n/a is a dead horse. there are non-conventional ways to tune a v6, but only jroo-vw holds the key to those secrets. hehehe. ultimately, you recode an 1.8t and it'll perform optimally because it has a flexible element- the turbo. you recode a v6 and well, it can only breath so well. but i am just repeating what you just said above. regardless, i havent yet stopped liking driving my blown grocery getter.
your grocery getter sux!

long live sal29 suckas!

And so it continues
Oh lord please make them stop.
