Getting any codes would be the best place to start. Otherwise, it's mostly a guessing game. Could be misfires due to bad plugs, wires, coil packs, etc. Maybe a boost leak (if it's a 1.8T). My first car was an old chevy cavalier and it had a similar issue due to fouled o2 sensors, but I'm not certain if that would apply here.

If you want to maybe start now, then I'd start with new spark plugs. It's routine and if it hasn't been done in a while, then it's inexpensive, worth doing just for maintenance sake and an easy job to do on the street. I'd recommend NGK plugs. They should be what came stock. You can go to NGK's website and use the part finder to see which plugs are specific to your car. I've been using their Iridium IX plugs in my v6 for about a year now without issue.
