Hey guys and gals,

Does anyone have a list of tools needed (mainly star/torx heads) to replace my strut bearings? I have the "pop" noise coming from my front end when I turn the wheel. I was told by a VW mechanic that's my culprit. I may go ahead and replace the shocks while I have everything apart. Also, if there is any other advice you have, I am all ears. Thank you!

Regarding the shocks (McPherson struts), after these are off the car, you'll need a spring compressor to disassemble the struts so the strut inserts and strut bearings can be replaced.

If the B6 Passat is anything like the last five VWs I've owned, there's always one fastener (likely the one at top holding the strut bearing on) that will require a special tool to remove. All the other work (strut removal from car, strut disassembly & reassembly, etc.) can be done with metric hand tools.

For special tools, you'll need an M14 triple square bit, a strut spreader tool
There are for the strut spreader, but my in my opinion it's always best to use the right tool for the job.

There are many DIYs for suspension, most are for GTI, but it's exactly the same procedure
