What faults would trigger this message on the information display? Pads don't have excessive wear. Happened this morning after about 2 minutes of driving in 45 deg weather. Nothing noticable during driving other than the warning.

Excessive rotor wear perhaps?

check the brake pad to sensor so see if there's continuity using a multi-meter. or better yet, scan the abs module first with a vag-com/1551

Why not just pop the hood and check the fluid level?
Simple, straight forward and cheap.
If it's low top it up.
If it ain't investigate further.

As mentioned above check the fluid. If its low , top it but need to figure out if yu have leak. If the ABS light is on it could be a ABS control module issue. I hope thats not true.

What year car & milage do you have? Pre 2000's dont have brake pad wear sensors. When's the last time you replaced the pads.
